Chapter 20
“Mr. Devlin?”
Devlin took the envelope, and after a long moment, he finally dared to open it.
Inside was a divorce certificate.
Over the past few days, Devlin hadn’t allowed himself to think about the document Jennifer had asked him to sign that morning when she left.
But now, the reality he had tried so hard to avoid was laid bare before him, crushing him completely.
Roy, seeing the divorce certificate, burst out laughing.
“Devlin, she doesn’t want you anymore. You deserve this!”
“I can’t wait to see how you end up.”
Her words fell on deaf ears as Devlin stood frozen, staring blankly at the divorce certificate.
Seeing no point in staying, Roy turned and left.
The face that had once brought her together with Devlin was now the reason she was the subject of ridicule.
“That must be Roy. Looks like she’s been kicked out. Being a mistress really doesn’t end well.”
“I heard she lost her child too. Karma, I guess.
“Though it’s a pity about the child, having such a mother…”
Hearing this, Roy stopped in her tracks, her heart aching terribly.
Her hand instinctively moved to her stomach. The baby had been so innocent, but because it was born of her, it never even had a chance to live
Roy took out her phone and opened her chat with Jennifer.
Although the chat history had been wiped clean she could still vividly recall every message she had ever sent to Jennifer.
Over the past year, it felt like she had been trapped in an unending nightmare.
In that nightmare, she was bitter, venomous, and utterly despicable.
She typed three words:
[I’m sorry.]
There was no response.
Chap 20
Even though she realized her mistakes, it was too late to turn back.
Roy crouched down on the ground, sobbing uncontrollably.
In the nursery, Devlin stared at the divorce certificate, wanting to tear it apart, but in the end, he couldn’t bring himself to do it.
Their names were side by side on that certificate, the closest they had been in a long time.
Every day, Devlin, posted on Instagram, apologizing repeatedly.
He confessed all his wrongs to the world and cornbed through the comments daily, desperately searching for clues about Jennifer.
He was living miserably, and his regret was genuine.
Everyone could see that.
He spent all his time locked in the nursery, only leaving occasionally to chase after leads from netizens, which always turned out fruitless, forcing him to return.
Devlin’s mother couldn’t bring herself to abandon her only son.
“Devlin, look at yourself. Do you even look human anymore? Are you saying you can’t live without Jennifer?”
“Mom, I can’t.”
Devlin’s voice was hoarse. “She’s all I can think about. I just can’t.”
Devlin’s mother’s eyes reddened. “Even if you want to find her, you need to pull yourself together. If she sees you like this, she won’t want you back.”
“Devlin, I won’t stop you from looking for her. I’ll even help you. But you can’t go on like this anymore.”
“Do you remember the version of you that Jennifer liked?”
At the mention of Jennifer, the emptiness in Devlin’s eyes brightened again.
“Yes, you’re right. She doesn’t like me being sloppy. She once said her favorite look was me in a suit.”
Devlin hurried to shave and change his clothes.
Watching this, Devlin’s mother felt a deep, indescribable sorrow.
Since the revelation of Devlin’s father’s affair, he had simply stopped coming home.
The Mellon Group had a new president, and the Mellon family’s status within the larger family was gradually diminishing.
The future seemed bleak and predictable.
Jennifer could surely be found, but even if they found her, there was no guarantee she’d ever come back
Suppressing her unease, Devlin’s mother made a phone call.
“Spare no expense to find Jennifer. Notify me immediately if there’s any news.”
