Chapter 17
Kavis shivered.
“I… I did it for my sister.”
“She’s been doing IVF for four years, and her health is getting worse. Your mother is putting so much pressure on her, I’m afraid she can’t take it.”
“If she adopts Roy’s child, it’ll shut up your family, and she’ll be relieved too.”
Devlin punched him hard in the face, then kicked him to the ground.
He didn’t hold back, landing punch after punch, the blows thudding against Kavis’s body until he finally stopped.
“Was it really for her, or was it for you?”
“I… of course, it’s for…”
Devlin sneered.
“I helped you start your business, you tasted the sweet benefits. You cooperated with me to hide things from your sister because you wanted to please me, to get more of my support.”
“Kavis, ask yourself–would your sister be willing to let you help her like this?”
The most secret thoughts were exposed, and Kavis’s face turned ashen.
He knew–Jennifer would never have agreed.
Otherwise, why would he cooperate with Devlin and rack his brain to keep it all hidden?
“Jennifer was pregnant, she had an abortion, and the child didn’t survive.”
“And her first child, the miscarriage? It was my mother’s miscarriage medicine that caused it.”
Kavis was struck like a bolt of lightning, his lips moved, but not a single word came out.
“Look at you now, it’s all karma.”
Devlin spoke to Kavis, but it was as if he was talking to himself.
“Jennifer doesn’t want you. You’re a stray dog now.”
“No… that’s impossible, my sister…”
“Even if Jennifer comes back, Roy’s child will remind her of what you and I have done!”
Kavis’s face turned gray as he was dragged out by the servants.
He returned home, battered and bruised.
Standing at the door, he suddenly remembered the look Jennifer gave him that day when she was sitting in the taxi, a shudder ran through him.
Kavis stumbled into the house, turned on the surveillance footage from that night.
When he found it, his heart dropped to the bottom.
He and Devlin had just entered the house when Jennifer followed in after them.
While he deliberately lingered in the basement, Jennifer stood motionless in the living room.
He brought the liquor out, and Jennifer asked him where Devlin was.
Now, thinking back, that was the last chance his sister gave him.
But he had lied to her, just like always.
The last look she gave him in the taxi was one where she had completely given up on him.
Kavis collapsed into a chair, instinctively shaking his head.
No, it couldn’t be.
Jennifer had always been the one who cared most for him. After their parents died, during the hardest years, she never thought about abandoning him.
He had done so many wrong things.
When he was a rebellious teenager, skipping classes and hanging out, it was his sister who brought him back from internet cafes and bars over and over again.
She spent all the money she worked hard to earn on him during that time.
But she never once truly blamed him.
She had said:
“Your sister hasn’t given up on you, and she won’t let you give up on yourself.”
“Anytime you want to learn, I’ll be here to help you start again.”
She had forgiven him so many times. How could she not forgive him this time?
Tears blurred his vision.
Kavis, completely losing control, started banging his head with his fists.
But how could he have forgotten?
He had always owed Jennifer.
She didn’t owe him..
“sis, I’m sorry, I was wrong.
Kavis completely broke down and passed out.
When he regained consciousness, he found himself in a hospital.
In his dazed state, he overheard a conversation.
“That’s probably Devlin’s mistress, right? I heard her child was born just a few days ago.”
“Really unfair, the Madam and President Devlin have been together for five years, but they’re no match for the mistress who can have children.”
“The Madam is so pitiful.”
The voices faded, but every word was seared into Kavis’s mind.
His nails dug into his palm, and a crazy thought flashed through his mind.
Devlin had said, with Roy’s child, Jennifer would never forgive them.
But what if…
What if the child disappeared?
