Chapter 11
On one side of the photo, Jennifer appeared alone, watching the whole scene.
It crushed Devlin’s last shred of hope.
She had seen it with her own eyes–how could he cover up the lie now?
He had thought he could hide everything perfectly. He had never really cared about Roy; he chose her because she resembled Jennifer.
The numerous signs he had ignored in recent days came rushing back to his mind.
When did Jennifer find out about him and Roy–was it the day she went back to the Mellon family for dinner, or even earlier?
How agonizing must these past days have been for her after she found out?
He had sworn that he would never make her sad, that he loved her so much.
When had things started to change?
His eyes turned red, and everything in front of him blurred.
He and Jennifer’s first child had been lost at seven months due to a stillbirth and a forced miscarriage.
Devlin knew it was because of the miscarriage–preventing medicine his mother had given to Jennifer.
Jennifer hadn’t wanted to take those bitter herbs, but he had persuaded her to drink them so his mother would think better of her.
After the baby was gone, Jennifer had been devastated.
But Devlin had lacked the courage to admit his fault, terrified that Jennifer would blame him.
In the four years that followed, Jennifer had undergone six rounds of IVF
Every failure deepened his guilt and oppression.
The constant smell of medicine in the house made it harder and harder for him to breathe.
Over the years, under his mother’s constant persuasion, he didn’t know when he had given in to the despicable thought.
“just have a baby.”
So when his mother brought Roy to him, he had accepted her, almost as if by tate.
With Roy, he could feel the vitality and liveliness of Jennifer when she was younger, which briefly helped him escape his guilt, and he had grown addicted to it.

He even planned to wait for Jennifer to fail IVF one more time before suggesting they adopt at
child.
They would bring Jennifer’s child back and make up for the loss.
But he forgot just because he hadn’t noticed didn’t mean it hadn’t happened.
And Jennifer, who had raised her younger brother on her own at the age of thirteen, was never the type to compromise for the sake of others.
The truth would come to light, and Jennifer leaving him was only a matter of time.
Devlin’s panic became uncontrollable.
No, at least for the sake of the child, Jennifer would forgive him.
“Devlin, are you listening when I’m talking to you?”
Devlin’s mother’s voice suddenly rose. “You need to get Jennifer to cooperate with you in recording a video and releasing a statement on behalf of the company. I’ll keep Roy at home out of sight until the storm blows over.”
“Why should she cooperate?”
Devlin’s mother paused, then responded, “It’s because she can’t have children…”
“We can’t have children because of you, right?”
Devlin’s words made his mother go silent.
“Make Roy get rid of the baby.”
“You’ve gone mad…”
“Jennifer is pregnant.”
After a long pause, Devlin’s mother finally spoke
“Roy’s baby is almost due, and we can’t get rid of it. The Mellon family isn’t incapable of raising another child. Besides, it’s not necessarily all my fault that Jennifer lost the baby last time.”
“If she’s pregnant this time but didn’t tell us, maybe there’s something wrong.”
“Have you said enough? She…”
Devlin’s voice stopped abruptly, cold sweat breaking out on his back. He remembered what Jennifer had said:
“The doctor suggested I try new medication. Maybe it will improve the success rate for the next IVF cycle.”
What medication had she switched to at that thin
Devlin ushed to the living room, remembering that the bag of medicine had been on the coffee table.
But it had been there before, and now when he looked, it was gone.
Devlin went back to check Jennifer’s clinic records on his phone.
The word “miscarriage” stabbed into his eyes, and Devlin felt a chill from head to toe.
Jennifer had lost the baby.
And she didn’t want him anymore.
