Chapter 10
The surprise Jennifer left was in the nursery.
That nursery was one that Jennifer and Devlin had carefully set up together during her first. pregnancy, with him by her side, helping her arrange everything
Later, when the baby was lost, Jennifer couldn’t bring herself to go back inside, and only he would occasionally visit.
Eventually, even he stopped going.
When he opened the door, Devlin’s hands were trembling so badly that he dropped the keys
twice.
The door finally opened.
Devlin immediately saw the envelope on the table.
Over
He stumbled, knocking the storage box on the table.
A thick stack of medical records and hundreds of syringes spilled out, rolling all over the floor.
These things were collected by him over the past few years, but not even all of them were there.
The words on the storage box were written by him four years ago.
[Devlin, you have to remember:
Every hardship Jennifer has gone through is for you.
You must double your care for her, and love her forever.
You must never wrong her.
If you can’t do this, you’re not worthy of her love.]
The words had long faded, but each one was deeply etched into Devlin’s heart, and his panic grew stronger.
Devlin picked up the envelope on the table, carefully tore it open.
Inside was an ultrasound report from a week ago
Jennifer was pregnant.
Devlin’s eyes turned red uncontrollably, and it hit him–this was the surprise she had prepared for himu.
No wonder she had been so angry, hiding away and refusing to see him.
He treated the ultrasound report like a treasure, reading every word over and over again.
This was the child that he and Jennifer had been waiting for, for five years.
Devlin called Jennifer again, but still couldn’t get through.
He sent her message after message.
[Jennifer, where did you go? I got the surprise, and I have so much to say to you.)
[Just now, my brother–in–law had a conflict with someone, and I didn’t want to worry you, so
I didn’t tell you beforehand. But don’t worry, it’s all settled now.]
[Baby, I know I didn’t do well. I’m willing to take responsibility and face punishment, just don’t make me unable to find you. I’m scared.]
But, as expected, there was no response.
By the time the early hours came, Devlin had no choice but to place his hope in Kavis.
“Is Jennifer with you?”
“How could she be with me? Devlin, weren’t you supposed to be with her for
wedding anniversary?”
Devlin felt a chill run down his spine.
your fifth
He desperately searched through his contacts but couldn’t find a single friend of Jennifer’s.
He even asked his own friends.
“Are you out of your mind? How could your wife be with me?”
Devlin was like a headless fly, spinning in confusion.
He couldn’t understand where Jennifer, pregnant with their child, could have gone.
Devlin didn’t sleep the whole night.
When the door opened in the morning, he immediately looked up.
“Jennifer, you’re finally back…”
But it wasn’t Jennifer who walked in–it was Devlin’s mother.
“Mom, do you know where Jennifer went?”
Devlin’s eyes were bloodshot, and he was frantic
“You still have the time to care about her? Take care of yourself!” Devlin’s mother snapped, her face dark with anger. “You and Roy made the trending news.”
Devlin staggered backward, as if struck
His mother continued to murmur angrily.
“When you two weren’t here yesterday on your anniversary, I knew something was wrong. If it wasn’t for her infertility, you wouldn’t have gone to someone else. I’m warning you, don’t soften your heart this time.”
“If she wants to remain the daughter–in–law of the Mellon family, she has to cooperate with you in clarifying things.”
Devlin took his mother’s phone, and at the top of the screen were two photos.
The first photo showed him kissing Roy passionately in front of a sea of blue roses.
He flipped to the second photo. In it, his face was ashen, devoid of any color.
