Violet slammed the steering wheel, cursing, “People without shame are unbeatable! Ava is shameless! She’s always scheming behind people’s backs, and to think you used to call her a friend!”
Audrey and Ava had different fates.
Ava’s parents had two sons and always wanted a daughter, but they never conceived one. They settled on adopting a girl from an orphanage, Ava.
At first, her parents adored Ava and treated her like a precious gem. When Ava was fifteen, her mom became pregnant with a girl. From then on, Ava’s status in the family plummeted.
Ava’s parents even considered sending Ava back to the orphanage. Being a prominent family, they were concerned about their reputation, so they kept her. Still, Ava’s life didn’t get any easier. She was treated coldly and became unwelcome in the family.
People naturally follow power, while adults hide.it well. The spoiled rich kids had no problem showing their disdain.
Once it became known that Ava had fallen out of favor, she became a target for bullying by the other rich kids.
That’s when Audrey met Ava.
No one wanted to be friends with Ava, so Audrey befriended her.

Violet, Audrey’s childhood friend, had always been a little bothered by how kind Audrey was to Ava.

Everyone thought they would be friends forever. Five years ago, Ava betrayed Audrey and nearly cost her her life.
“You should never have pitied her and treated her so well! She deserved to be bullied! And as for Theodore, he must be blind to love someone as wretched as Ava!”
The more Violet thought about it, the angrier she got, clenching her fists as if ready to punch Ava right then and there.
Audrey handed her a bottle of water. “Here, drink some water and calm down. Don’t get yourself worked up.”
“Audrey, how are you not angry at all? You used to…” Violet paused. “Never mind, let’s not talk about the past.”
Audrey smiled but didn’t say anything.
“Audrey, you really seem different,” Violet said, eyeing her closely.
“Really?”
Audrey thought about it and realized she had indeed become more indifferent toward the relationship between Theodore and
Ava.
Maybe it was because the pain back then had been too much.
The pain had made her numb. So much so that when Ava claimed to be carrying Theodore’s child, Audrey had only felt

“But I’m really happy to see you like this,” Violet added. Then, frowning, she said, “What about the competition you entered? Ava’s one of the first–round judges. It’s going to be tough to get past her.”
Suddenly, Audrey’s phone buzzed with a new message.
“Getting past her isn’t hard,” Audrey said, opening the message and handing her phone to Violet.
[Dear Ms. Beaumont, we are pleased to inform you that your application has been approved. We look forward to your outstanding performance in the competition! -Acasa Architectural Design Competition Organizers]
Violet’s eyes widened in shock. “Audrey, how did you manage that?”
“I happened to know someone, and we made a deal.”
Violet blinked. “Who? What kind of deal? You didn’t sell yourself, did you? Audrey, it’s not worth it just for a competition, if worse comes to…”
Before Violet could finish, Audrey flicked her forehead.
“What kind of nonsense do you have going on in your mind?”
“Well, who could be powerful enough to get you past the judges like that? I didn’t know you knew someone so important!” Violet rubbed her head. “Audrey, what secrets are you keeping from
me?”
“It’s just an old acquaintance of mine who happens to have

“Whatever, at least you got through the registration! Come on, let’s go out for a big meal!” Violet said, grabbing her seatbelt, ready to buckle up.
“Let’s do it another day.”
Violet looked at her, confused. Audrey explained, “I have to go. back today for dinner. I need to help my brother entertain some guests.”
“Seriously…” Violet pouted. “It’s so hard to get you out of your busy life, and now you’re not even staying for dinner?”
Audrey patted her head. “Next time, I’ll treat you.”
Hearing this, Violet couldn’t argue anymore and pouted. “Fine, I’ll give you a ride back.”
“No need. The design institute’s close by. I’ll grab some materials. You head back first. I’ll take you to look at the house in a few days when I’m free.” Audrey opened the car door as she spoke.
Without waiting for Violet’s response, Audrey got out and headed toward the design institute.
She hadn’t gone far when her phone rang.
She answered. Before she could speak, an older man’s low, amused voice came through. “Did you get the confirmation message?”
