Chapter 44 In Hospital
Theodore glanced at the caller ID before answering the call. Maxwell’s voice immediately came through the phone. “Mr. Ainsworth, Ms. Rosewood fell and is in the hospital.”

Theodore’s brow furrowed as he looked down at Audrey, who was curled up on the sofa, his expression shifting. He took off his coat, tossed it to her, and turned to leave.
With a loud bang, the door slammed shut behind him.
Bang!
Audrey stared blankly at the suit jacket, curled up tighter, buried her face in her arms, and let out a bitter smile as tears began to fall.

At the hospital, in the VIP obstetrics ward.
“Please rest assured, Mr. Ainsworth. Ms. Rosewood was just frightened, nothing serious. She can be discharged after some
rest.”
“Understood,” Theodore responded coldly, glancing at Maxwell.
Maxwell caught the cue and immediately escorted the doctor out of the room.
“Theodore, I’m sorry,” Ava said softly, half–leaning against the

Theodore looked at her for a moment, then stepped forward, adjusted her pillow, and helped her lie down. “I’ve told you, there’s no need to apologize to me.”
Ava smiled but, as she glanced at him, her eyes caught a smudge of red. Her smile froze.
It was a lipstick mark, right on Theodore’s collar.
She had known Theodore for years, and no woman had ever gotten that close to him, let alone left a lipstick mark in such an intimate place.
Who could it be?
Audrey’s face flashed through her mind, and her heart skipped a beat. Her hands clenched beneath the blanket.
No, it couldn’t be her!
They were getting divorced soon.
Ava tried to deny it, but her instincts told her otherwise–it had to be Audrey.
“Theodore, how are things with you and Audrey lately?” she asked, watching his face closely, trying to read his expression.
Theodore frowned. “Why are you bringing her up?”
“Don’t be upset. I didn’t mean anything by it. I just heard her mention your divorce when we were at the mall last time…” Ava paused deliberately, then added with feigned concern, “Maybe she misunderstood our relationship? If that’s the case, I could

At the mention of “divorce,” Theodore’s eyes darkened, and a flicker of anger ignited in him. He replied calmly, “You don’t need to explain anything to her.”
“But if I’m the reason you’re separating, I…”

“She won’t divorce me,” Theodore cut her off. “She’s using this to get my attention. A woman like her, who talks about love but is full of lies, would never give up the status and wealth of being Mrs. Ainsworth.”
Ava wasn’t convinced.
Women understand each other best, after all.
She knew what had happened five years ago, and she knew how deeply Audrey had loved Theodore. Audrey wouldn’t ask for a divorce unless she was truly resolved.
Was Theodore so certain because he thought she wouldn’t go through with it, or because he himself had no intention of letting her go?
If it was the latter, then what if the truth from five years ago. came to light…?
Ava didn’t dare to dwell on it. She looked up and tried again, “But divorce isn’t a trivial matter, Theodore. What if she’s serious? Would you agree to let her go?”
Theodore remained silent.

After a moment, he said in a low voice, “It’s late. You should get
some rest.”
“Theodore!”
Ava’s heart sank. She grabbed his wrist, calling out to him anxiously. She opened her mouth to speak, but when she saw the coldness in his eyes, the words caught in her throat. In the end, she could only whisper, “Will you stay with me tonight?”
Theodore hesitated for a moment. “Okay, I won’t leave. I’ll sleep outside.”
With that, he gently removed her hand from his arm and left the room without looking back.
Ava watched him leave, her eyes gleaming.
After a moment, she turned away and made a decision. She opened her email, found the preliminary review list, located Audrey’s name, and deleted it.
“Audrey, you should never have tried to take what’s mine…”
