Chapter 16 Come Home
Audrey still had to wait for her father to come home with Caleb. She didn’t want to die.
“Pull over!” Audrey shouted. Her voice cracked, her face devoid of color. “Theodore, pull over!”
But Theodore ignored Audrey, pressing the accelerator to the
floor.
As the large truck loomed, her vision blurred. Tears streaming down her cheeks without realizing it. Trembling with fear, she pleaded, “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry! Theodore, please! I was wrong!”
Audrey truly regretted it. Regretted not standing her ground. against her father and Dunstan two years ago when they pressured her to marry Theodore.
Regretted that twelve years ago, she had insisted on tagging along with Caleb to graduation, which meant she would never have met Theodore and fallen for him so hopelessly.
When Theodore heard Audrey’s apologies and caught sight of her tense body because of fear in the corner of his eye, he yanked the steering wheel hard. The truck whizzed past them just in
time.
The car gradually slowed down before finally stopping at the

It wasn’t even seven o’clock, the height of rush hour, and the roads were packed.
The Maybach tore through traffic like a wild, untamed beast, weaving dangerously between cars.
Audrey’s back pressed hard agains

pounding. One car after another flashed their headlights at them, disorienting her as they sped past.
“Honk! Honk!” A large truck blared its horn, its thunderous sound echoing in her ears, a reminder that death was only inches away.
Audrey thought, “No, I can’t die here!”

Audrey’s mind went blank. But the instinct to survive kicked in. She quickly flung the door open and stumbled out. Behind her, Theodore’s icy voice followed. “Audrey, I spoiled you too much these past two years. You can’t just say sorry and expect it all to go away. You need to face the consequences.”
The Maybach sped away.
“Ugh…” Audrey’s legs felt weak. She used all her strength to lean against a nearby pole. Her eyes welled up as she gagged.
After returning to Kingwood Villa, Audrey locked herself in her bedroom, her heart racing. Every time she closed her eyes, the image of the oncoming truck crashed into her mind.
Audrey spent the entire night in a restless half–sleep. It wasn’t until the morning that a phone call from Penelope finally roused her.
Penelope informed Audrey that their client had new suggestions. for the design project she and Chloe were working on, and they needed to catch the earliest flight to discuss it in detail.

Audrey thought she’d only be gone for a couple of days at most. But a typhoon hit, and the client kept making changes, dragging the trip out for seven days before she could finally return to
Kenston.
Audrey and Chloe emerged from Kenston Airport.
“This week has totally worn me out! We lost a whole weekend to this mess. It’s infuriating!” Chloe complained as they waited for a taxi, stretching her arms. She glanced at her phone and sighed, “The timing is just awful. It’ll be almost noon by the time we get back to the design institute.”
Audrey pulled out her phone at Chloe’s words to check the time.
It was 10:32.
“Why don’t we go for lunch?” Chloe suggested.
Just as Audrey hesitated, her phone lit up with an incoming call from Elias Wills.
Elias was the butler for the Beaumont family. Since Nicholas had been imprisoned, the household staff had been let go, leaving only Elias behind.
“Elias, what’s going on?” Audrey answered, her voice warm.
“Ms. Beaumont, do you have time to come back today?” Elias hesitated, then said, “Mr. Caleb Beaumont hasn’t rested. properly for several days. No matter how much I try to persuade him, he won’t listen.”

Audrey frowned slightly. “I’ll head back right now.”
After hanging up, Audrey pressed her lips. Chloe, who had vaguely overheard the conversation, saw the taxi arrive and quickly opened the door. “Audrey, you should go back.”
“What about you?” Audrey instinctiv
asked. Several flights
had just landed, making it harder to catch a cab.
“It’s okay. I have plenty of time to wait,” Chloe replied. “Family matters are more urgent. Just get in the car.”
Worried about what Elias had said, Audrey nodded, no longer insisting. She thanked Chloe and got into the car, heading toward the Beaumont Villa.
