Chupter 41
Yasmin never expected that calch would go against Corine just to protect her.
Come paused before letting out a bitter laugh. She pointed at Caleb and Yasmin with trembling hands. “How dare you treat me like this? If parob were here, he would have never allowed it! He would have neen allowed you to humilate me like this!”
Yasmin telt a headache coming on and tried to explain it as calmly as she could, “Mrs Grant, that
what we meant.”
“We Get out! Get the hell out of my house!” Corine yelled as she pointed at the door. Her eyes were filled with hatred as she glared at Yasmin and Caleb. “Caleb, you really like stealing Tacob’s things, don’t you? You’ve always been like this! Seram!
Stealing Jacob’s things? Yasmin couldn’t help but wonder what Corine meant. However, before she could process her words, Caleb broke her thoughts. He grabbed her hand and said to Corine, “Take care.” He then pulled Yasmin with him and walked out.
The afternoon sun shone so bright it was almost blinding Yasmin quietly stared at her own shadow, with Caleb’s right next to hers. Under the midday sun, their two shadows merged, with their arms linked closely together.
Yasmin thought about how Caleb had protected her earlier and couldn’t help but feel a mix of longing and self–mockery in her heart.
He always protected her in ways she never expected, making her think there might be a place for her in his heart. But then, he would snap her back into reality, reminding her that his care was nothing more than a passing whim. It wasn’t out of love.
“Geb, thank you for earlier.” Yasmin withdrew her hand, Caleb’s suddenly empty hand twitched slighthe before he shoved it into his pocket. “Don’t see her again.”
“Mrs. Grant used to treat me really well. She’d remember my favorite foods, take me out on trips, comfort me when I’m down, and even encourage me during hard times, Sh really land to me…”
Yasmin lowered her gate, feeling a sense of sadness. She didn’t understand why things had turned into this. She had gone to see Corine not because she was looking for trouble. It was more like she was hoping that Corine would turn back into the loving elder who cared for her
“Yasmin, to her, you still belong to Jacob. Caleb’s voice sounded from above.
Yasmin looked up at him in confusion. The sun was blinding, making her squint her eyes slightly. But Caleb had already started walking ahead.
Yasmin snapped back to her senses and quickly caught up to him. “What do you mean by that?”
“Before Jacob passed, you had a rather… close relationship with him. To my mom, although he has been gone for four years, he should always be on your mind and the one you consider closest to you.”
Caleb was right. To Corine, even if she were to accept Yasmin as a daughter–in–law, it would only be as Jacob’s wife and not caleb’s
Yasmin finally learned why Corine had suddenly grown to dislike her. She knew that if she wanted to reconcile with her, the only way was to divorce Caleb. But that was impossible. “But I really do miss Jacob.” Yasmin gazed in the direction of the cemetery. “To me, Jacob is no different from family.”
Caleb suddenly stopped in his tracks. Yasmin had just finished speaking and didn’t notice him stopping She bumped right into his back, staggering back a few steps before regaining her balance.
She rubbed her sore forehead and glared at Caleb. Before she could speak, be beat her to it “Yasmin, you’ve never been stingy with Jacob.”
She had never been stingy with her compliments, her longing, het smiles, her reliance, and her love for him.
But back then, he had also been by her side. He was also the one who personally took her out of the psychiatric hospital. Yet just like Corine, Yasmin always only noticed Jacob and
never him.
