“After I am done with the necessary adjustments, the dress will be delivered to the house. It should be a day before the wedding, normally I send people over to help you get dressed but Mr. Scott does not like strangers at his place but if you do need any help, I will personally come down myself.” Tania says with a smile.
“Uh, thank you but the dress is quite easy to wear. Fam sure I can manage on my own.”
She nods, “Okay” she turns to Sawyer, “Drive safe.” she smiles at me and Candace before going back into the building.
The car is silent as we drive back home. The silence is broken by the embarrassing grumble of my stomach. I blush as I make eye contact with Sawyer through the rear-view mirror.
am not used to eating early in the morning and we left he house early so.” I trail off hoping my silly excuse is enough to douse the awkwardness.
It’s not that I am not used to eating early, actually I am not but the reason is different from whatever Sawyer might be thinking
I did not eat early because there was no food, and the little 1 could get I usually saved it for lunch so it could last me through out the day.
“I am under strict instructions to take you straight home” he says with an apologetic look on his face.
I smile awkwardly at him and look away, pretending to adjust Candace’s clothes. I don’t miss the meaning behind his words, Aaron is now in charge of my movements, at least till the contract expires
We arrive at Aaron’s apartment building and we go up to the penthouse. Sawyer presses the doorbell and a middle aged woman opens the door.
“Welcome” she says with a warm smile. She steps aside as Candace and I walk in.
Candace immediately runs to sit in front of the large TV, “Mama” she calls me, pointing at the TV. I switch it on and change it to a channel showing cartoons before turning to the woman.
She was still standing at the door, with her hand clasped together
“We haven’t met, my name is Aurora”
“Yes, I know ma’am. Mr. Scott already told me about you. My name is Beatrice, I am one of the maids of the penthouse
“Oh, it’s nice to meet you
Beatrice.
She smiles brightly. “The pleasure is mine.” she walks past me to the direction of the kitchen, “I made some food, would you like to eat now?” she asks.
I almost cry in gratitude, “Yes please.”
“Candace, come and eat.” I say but she does not budge from ber position in front of the TV
I go to her and crouch in front of her “Dace, food,” she shakes her head and continues watching the cartoon.
I decide to leave her alone, she is probably still full from drinking apple juice all morning.
go to the kitchen to help Beatrice with serving the food but she shoos me away,
I grab the dish in her hands, “Let me help.

She holds it, “Maybe next time ma’am but this is the first time we are meeting. Let me serve you.” she insists stubbornly. sigh and go to sit at the dining table.
Beatrice serves me stir-fry spaghetti and meatloaf and 1 almost moan at how good it tastes. “This is really good.” I say between mouthfuls of meatloaf.
She chuckles, “You must have been really hungry.” I down a glass of water and sit straighter. I shrug. “Just a little.” I continue eating. “Aaron is really lucky, he has been eating this everyday.”
She shakes her head with a fond smile in her face, “No, I am not the main chef for Mr. Scott, but there are days like today when he asks me to cook.
1 like to think it’s because it reminds him of actual home cooking and not just the expensive cuisines he is normally used to
“I don’t know about expensive cuisines, but this cooking deserves a five star rating.”
She chuckles “You flatter me ma’am”
“Please, call me Aurora.”
“I am not sure I can do that, you are going to be the lady of the penthouse in a few days.”
The lady of the penthouse’ sounded like the title of a horror movie. I shiver at the thought, “Uh, please don’t call me the lady of the penthouse, sounds weird” I say.
“Okay ma’am, but you are going to be Mr. Scott’s wife. I won’t be comfortable calling you your first name.”
There is no point trying to convince her, we only just met. She will get comfortable as time goes by “Okay, whatever you wishi.”
I finish up with my food and lean back in my seat in satisfaction. I carry my dirty plates into the kitchen and Beatrice rushes towards me to collect them, I evade her.
“Let me do this one.” she sighs and watches me as I wash the dishes and place them back in their cabinet.
I turn to her and fold my arms, I did not have anything to do and Candace was occupied with cartoons so I figure I should engage Beatrice in conversation.
Maybe it can help me know more about Aaron, “So, Beatrice. How did you learn to cook like that? Is it natural or a honed. skill.”
She leans against the counter with a smile playing on her lips, “My mama taught me, I grew up on a farm so, my sisters and I were always in the kitchen while the boys were working on the farm. It’s hard to not pick up a recipe or two.
When I was younger, I used to fantasize about living on a farm was around the time I had my ‘end global warming” phase.
I believed industrialisation was a poison and everyone needed to go back to nature. I grew out of it eventually but the idea of living on a farm is still exciting.
“How was it like? Growing up on a farm.” I ask. My eagerness is obvious in my tone. A dreamy look crosses her face as she tells me about her different exploits growing up in a large family
I am holding the sides of my stomach as I laugh, it is starting to burt from laughing so much. I dab at my eyes to clean the tears that have gathered from my laughter, “Why would he even think that was a good solution?”
Beatrice shrugs, “He was a teenage boy, not many at that age bothered to use their brains.”
“Yeah but replacing your mum’s cocoa mixture with cow shit is the wildest thing I have heard today. She would obviously be

able to tell from the smell”
“All he knew was he was going to be in big trouble for eating mum’s cocoa. She cooked and fermented that mixture for days.
I shake my head, the remnants of my laughter dying in my throat. “Your childhood was quite fun.”
10
She squinted and sighed, “I didn’t think it was back then since it was the only life I knew. But since moving to the big city. I’d say yes, it was quite fun being a country girl”
I think about Candace and the life I have provided for her so far. If we had continued living like that, would she had considered her childhood fun? I shake my head to ward off the thoughts before they could dampen my mood.
“So, how come you are not the main chef of the penthouse?” With her cooking, she could be
I don’t see why Aaron would have another chef when he has her. I have not tasted the cooking of the chef because Aaron ordered food for Candace and I yesterday but I am satisfied with Beatrice’s cooking
Well, I am not familiar with what excites the taste buds of the rich.
“i was employed strictly as a maid. The cooking thing actually has a funny backstory. Would you like to hear it!”
“Of course.”
“Mr. Scott was away on a work trip and I was scheduled to clean the house for the duration of his trip. On one of those days, I felt faint because I had been too preoccupied and forgot to eat breakfast. So, I decided to prepare a quick lunch for myself. Mr. Scott came back early from his work trip and walked in on me cooking.
She fills a glass cup with water and continues, even though he had given me permission to use his kitchen before. I was still a bit afraid of being caught she chuckles
“While I was trembling and trying to explain, he asked me if I made enough for two, I said yes and he asked me to give him some. I think he was having a bad day or something, after he finished eating, he went to his room without another word and it has been an occasional practice since then.”
I open my mouth to say something but Candace’s excited yelp makes me walk out of the kitchen to check on her.
I see her standing in front of Aaron with her hands folded behind her back, she is swaying happily while Aaron stares at her with an unreadable expression on his face.
He raises his head and notices me, then he frowns, “Get the kid he walks past her and towards me.
Beatrice comes out of the kitchen, “Welcome home, Sir.” she says warmly. He nods at her and walks past us inside.
Beatrice notices the sneer on my face. “What’s wrong ma’am?
Your a***ole of a boss is what is wrong, my mind screams but I turn to her with a bright smile on my face, “Nothing.”
Nothing at all.
