I didn’t want to be disturbed by Jason.
anymore, but I didn’t know where to go.
If he wanted to find me, he could find me
anywhere.
I knew, when the Sterlings showed up at my
door, it was because of him.
I didn’t know why, maybe it was just a force
of habit, or maybe there was still a shred of
affection?
L
It didn’t matter.
I spent the entire afternoon looking out of the
window, trying to figure out where to go next.
Before I turned five, my life was just my
nanny and bodyguards.
After that, Jason became a constant in my
life.
He was such a huge part of my life.
But so what?
My life was just beginning. The past was in
the past.
Jason would never be a part of my life again.
く
That was enough for me.
I moved out of my apartment and booked a
ticket to Hong Kong. My mother happened to
be there, too.
She was worried about me, so she dragged
me out for days, and I also met her boyfriend.
He was really graceful. Yes, graceful.
He was nothing like my father.
He was so kind and caring, always making
sure people around him were comfortable,
but not in a creepy way.
Uncle Shen had been my mother’s boyfriend
for the longest time. He had asked her to
marry him, but she had turned him down.

They had split up at some point, but then my
mother talked him back, and now they were
really good.
Seeing her so cheerful, I smiled.
Who needs love anyway?
Life was still beautiful.
But, of course, the one person who shouldn’t
show up kept showing up.
A week later, I ran into Jason again.
I was fuming. Jason’s sudden appearances,
the Sterlings turning up at my doorstep.
If I didn’t figure out what was going on, I
would be a total idiot.
く
I looked at him coldly, “What do you want?
Do I need to spell it out for you?”
“We’re divorced, Jason. Please, please, never
appear in front of me again. Can you do
that?”
“You have everything you want, the bastard is
gone, and we’re divorced.”
“You can take Sarah home, and have a
hundred kids if you want.”
“I just don’t know why you keep turning up
here.”
I blocked the door and said all of that.
I talked about the past, I talked about Sarah,
about the three years of agony, and the baby
L
As I recounted everything, his face became
whiter and whiter. By the time I had finished, I
felt a sense of release.
But Jason looked as white as a sheet. His
hands gripped the door frame. The veins in
his hands were bursting.
I couldn’t close the door, we were just staring
at each other.
In this distance, I could see the desperation
and pain in his eyes.
Finally, he mumbled, “I’m sorry.”
“I regret it, Lara.
“Please forgive me, okay?”
