“One moment he’s telling her to get in, the next he’s telling her to get out. What’s his problem?” Mia thought, exasperated.
Hunter pressed his lips together, then bent down and scooped her up in his arms. Turning to Sam, he instructed, “You drive Miss Walker home.”
Mia immediately understood his intentions. Jenna had complained about the cold wind, so Hunter had simply decided to have her leave with Sam. Should she applaud him for his thoughtfulness?
Sam glanced at Mia’s pale face, hesitating. Wasn’t Mr. Jasper aware that this might hurt his wife? He had a sinking feeling that Hunter was driving their relationship closer to the edge with each passing day.
“Hunter, aren’t you coming with me?” Jenna asked, her eyes fixed jealously on Mia, now held close in his arms. She would rather brave the cold with him than leave alone.
Mia caught Jenna’s murderous glare and raised her eyebrows with a slight smirk. “Oh, jealous, are we?” she thought.
Without missing a beat, she wrapped her arms around Hunter’s neck and purred, “Hubby…”
If it was all just an act, she could put on a show too.
Jenna was on the verge of exploding. “That woman, that despicable woman!” Jenna fumed.
Mia’s soft and seductive voice lingered in Hunter’s mind, bringing to life a flood of intimate memories. The way she wrapped those long legs around him, whispering “Hubby” in the same alluring way, had driven him to madness every time.
His body tensed as a warmth crept up. Catching sight of Sam still waiting by the car, he snapped, “Well? Get moving!” His voice was rougher than usual.
Sam jumped to open the door, rushing to drive away. “No wonder the boss always heads home. With a captivating wife like that, who wouldn’t?” Sam thought.
Watching from the car, Jenna’s jealousy was nearing a breaking point and a dark idea began to take root. If only Mia were gone for good, then she would never have to worry about losing Hunter to her again.
The car sped off, leaving Hunter holding Mia in his arms. He looked down at her and asked, “Trying to seduce me, huh?”
“Put me down first,” she replied, pushing against him, “I’d rather not end up all over social media as the mistress everyone loves to hate!”
Everyone thought Hunter and Jenna were engaged, so if photos of her with Hunter leaked, she would look like the other woman.
Once, the thought would have left her heartbroken. But ever since she decided to divorce Hunter, it didn’t sting as much. Once they divorced, they would be nothing more than strangers. What was there to be sad
about?
Hunter scowled, clearly irritated. “Mia, what nonsense are you spouting?” Still, he set her down on the ground.
Chapter 009
Mia adjusted her hair with a smile. “Don’t you already know the truth, Hunter? We’ve been married for three years, yet to everyone in Haven City, I’m still the other woman. It’s almost laughable”
“Who’s calling you the other woman?” Hunter gritted out in anger. “Just now, you were all smiles with Zac even accepting a gift from him. I haven’t even started with you about that, and here you are, turning this
on me!”
His voice was low, his expression icy. He couldn’t shake the image of her laughing softly with Zac, looking so gentle and so beautiful. It was a side of her he had never seen.
Mia thought about the star–shaped earrings Zac had given her, a strange ache settling in her chest. They had been through so much together, and she knew she owed him a lot. But these were thoughts she kept to herself and would never share with Hunter.
Seeing her fall silent, Hunter’s frustration grew. “So, your silence means you agree? What is it, Ma you in such a rush to line up your next guy?”
