And so, when they arrived home, Scarlet opened the door.
Screaming, she dragged Drew inside.
“Oh, my precious son, you finally came back! I missed you so much. Let me have a good look at you!”
Kolby also patted Drew’s shoulder, looking curious.
Drew entered the house and felt uneasy. He looked at me outside the door and introduced, “Moes
hd Dad, this is Penelope, the one I told you about.”
The old couple then glanced over with a cold expression on their faces and coldly said, “So you’re Penelope, huh? Come in, don’t just stand there like a fool.”
I had a kind smile frozen on my face as I entered naturally, put down my bag, changed my shoes, and wanted to sit on the sofa to take a rest. However, Drew pulled me up abruptly.
Scarlet stared at me fiercely and muttered, “So rude.”
Oh! I understood that I should let them sit first before I could sit down. It’s my fault for not
understanding the etiquette.
Kolby and Scarlet pulled Drew to sit down, and the family started to exchange pleasantries while I awkwardly stood on the side.
After standing for ten minutes, Kolby glanced at me and asked Scarlet, “Oh dear, don’t just keep talking. It’s already past six o’clock, Scarlet, what are we having for dinner?”
Scarlet waved her hand casually and looked at Drew, saying, “Whatever, just let her choose a few of her specialty dishes! Make a soup too, both your dad and I have sensitive stomachs and we always need a sip of soup before meals, remember that for the future…”
Does this mean I was supposed to cook?
How nice it would be! I went back to my own home, but they wouldn’t let me sit. When it was time to eat, did they remember me?
“I couldn’t cook, let’s go out to eat, or we can order takeout.”
“What?” Scarlet exploded, suddenly raising her head and staring at me. “You can’t cook? You don’t even know how to cook? Then how do you two eat normally?”
Drew answered for me, saying that he was usually busy with work. He would have lunch in the cafeteria and either go out to eat or order takeout for dinner. Sometimes, he would have a
late–night snack after working overtime.
“How can this be possible! How can one eat out every day? It must cost so much money! Drew, look

at this, it’s all because of your spoiling! A woman who can’t cook? Earning over three thousand a month and still indulging in extravagant meals all the time? This is not how a responsible and thrifty person should live!”
“That’s right!” Kolby also spoke up, “You spend all the money you earn on food and drinks, how are you going to buy a house or a car? How are you going to be filial to us? I really don’t understand what’s gotten into you, why do you have to find someone like this…”
Did he really criticize me in person? I immediately got angry!
“I earned money to make my life better and more comfortable, not to buy houses or cars for anyone!”
“Penelope!” Drew stood up with a stern expression on his face and spoke in a harsh tone, “How did you talk to my parents!”
He spoke while squinting his eyes and furrowing his brows, appearing both timid and fierce, which
made me angry and speechless.
He pulled me into the bedroom and Drew bowed and begged me, “Baby! My parents just arrived, can you please be patient and behave well? You can’t expect them to like you for no reason, right? Interacting with people is about exchanging hearts, treat them well and they will accept you.”
After coaxing me, I went to his parents‘ place and pleaded my case. I explained how hard I worked and how I never had time to cook, hoping they would understand and be considerate towards me.
That evening, I didn’t have dinner with them. Drew took his parents out to eat, and I went out to buy
a bowl of wonton soup.
As I was eating, tears started to flow down, feeling both aggrieved and angry.
