Lovestory–Chapter 1
Rhys Harvey and I agreed to get married on our seventh anniversary.
The next day, I went to the city hall and waited for him.
Yet Rhys never showed up. Instead, I saw he share the news of him tying the knot with his childhood sweetheart on social media.
He posted a photo of him with Kaitlin Braun, both holding their marriage certificate.
“Hello? Are you here to register your marriage?”
I stood in front of the city hall, watching couples passing by, all brimming with happiness. On the contrary, I was like an abandoned child, all alone and ignored.
“Hello?”
The staff member’s repeated urging snapped me back to reality.
As I looked up at the staff member in front of me, my mind went blank and tears instinctively welled
- up.
Then I nodded.
Seeing tears streaming down my face, the staff member was taken aback. Then she asked with concern, “So… where is your husband?”
My husband?
Glancing at picture of Rhys and Kaitlin on my phone, I forced a smile and said, “He got married to
someone else.”
After saying that, I turned around and walked away, afraid that someone would notice my sorry
state.
A week ago, Rhys proposed to me in front of my entire family, saying he wanted to spend his life with me as my lawfully–wedded husband.
But now…
As tears kept streaming down my face, I tapped my phone again, trying to find the evidence to prove
that I had mistaken.
However, looking at the marriage certificate in the picture, I knew it was true.
We had been together for seven years, and he promised not to leave me till death did us apart.
Rhys’s commitments came back to me.

Finally, I slumped to the floor.
He never forgot about our every anniversary or my birthday.”
Every time, he would buy me gifts, make preparations in advance, and celebrate for me.
For the past seven years, he would pick me up from work every day, regardless of the weather.
In the eyes of others, he was the perfect boyfriend, and my colleagues all envied me, saying that I was lucky.
Even just yesterday, he held my face and looked at me with affection, saying, “Bridget, we are getting married tomorrow, and you will be my wife from now on.”
After saying that, he gently kissed my forehead.

I was overwhelmed with joy at that time, and my mind couldn’t stop fantasizing. love had finally come to fruition, and what followed was a lifetime of companionship.
We were supposed to grow old together, but little did I know it was just a joke.
The setting sun on the horizon was as red as blood.
Looking at the sympathetic gazes of passersby sweeping over, I wiped away my tears, leaned. against the wall, and struggled to stand up.
I wanted to go see Rhys.
Something must have gone wrong.
That couldn’t be true. Rhys would never marry another woman.
I took a taxi home. Just as the car arrived at my neighborhood, I got out of the car. Then I ran toward my house, almost tripping over.
Just as I took out the keys, I heard a conversation between my boyfriend and his good friend Jordan.
Morton.
“I married Kaitlin.”
Rhys’s deep, magnetic voice came through, and I put my hand down.
Clutching the documents tightly in my hand, I gave a wry smile. Just like that, Rhys burst my
bubble.
“Kaitlin?”
On the other end of the phone, Jordan burst out, “Damn it, didn’t you say you loved Bridget? How
could you marry Kaitlin?”
Rhys sighed, his voice filled with exhaustion. “Kaitlin has been diagnosed with a terminal illness,

and her time is running out. She cried and told me that her biggest wish in this lifetime is to have a wedding with me.
“She and I were childhood sweethearts, and I couldn’t refuse her, because…
“I I loved her.”
The last three words stabbed into my heart like a knife.
I convulsed all over in pain, finding it hard to breathe.
I wondered, “Rhys, you love her?
Then what about me?”
Tears welled up in the eyes, rolling down my cheeks.
“Rhys! How could you?!”
There came the roar of Jordan and the thud of him kicking over a chair.
He roared over the phone, “Rhys! Can’t you secretly hold an event to fulfill Kaitlin’s wish, even if you want to? Why do you have to make it this big? Don’t you think you are a jerk?”
I thought Rhys would realize his mistake, but to my surprise, he sighed.
Then he said, “I’ve loved Kaitlin for over a decade. If we were to get married, it had to be done in at grand and glorious manner. Doing it secretly would be an insult to our pure and flawless love! I don’t want her to feel aggrieved in her final days.”
Upon hearing these words, I collapsed to the ground.
Leaning against the cold wall, I burst into tears.
I thought, “He has loved Kaitlin for over a decade.
“What am I to him then?”
Jordan questioned, “What about Bridget? Have you ever thought about her? She was eagerly waiting for you to marry her.”
I lifted my head and looked towards the door.
Rhys replied smugly, “I have been treating her well for these years, and she loves me very much. She has said that I am her one and only. So, no matter what happens, she will never leave me.
Moreover, her parents were already gone. Without me, she has nowhere to go.”
