Chapter 7
“Although Mr. Lowell has no cancer, the examination results show that his health is extremely fragile. He’s severely malnourished,” the doctor added as he seemed to sense Cassandra’s doubts. “Has he been dieting recently?”
The doctor turned to Sebastian. “It’s perfectly normal to want to stay in shape, but skipping meals to lose weight isn’t the way to go, Mr. Lowell. It has started to seriously affect your health. Just look at how pale your face is now. No wonder your sister thought you had cancer.”
Cassandra’s face turned grim at once.
Sebastian had indeed been neglecting his meals recently. It wasn’t surprising. After all, he was sick, and with Cassandra pushing him away a disgust toward him, he had lost all desire to eat properly.
But to Cassandra, those weren’t the reasons.
and showing
“You ruined your body just to take an illness and deceive me?” Her gaze turned icy, cold enough to freeze the blazing sun of summer. “What are you trying to do? Make me pity you and agree to be with you? Wake up, Sebastian!”
“I didn’t…” Tears fell uncontrollably. Despite knowing she wouldn’t believe him, Sebastian still tried to deny it. “I really didn’L”
But his denial seemed so feeble in the face of the undeniable truth.
Cassandra’s expression was one of deep disappointment as she looked at him. “How did I raise you to be like this?”
At that moment, Sebastian felt a sharp, unbearable pain in his chest.
Cassandra left him alone at the hospital and walked away with Keith. She didn’t speak to him for an entire week after that not even once.
Sebastian tried several times to mend their relationship, but each attempt ended in failure.
It wasn’t until the day before Cassandra and Keith’s wedding that he spoke to her again.
“Cassie, you’re getting married tomorrow. Are you really not going to talk to me?” Sebastian lowered his eyes. His thick lashes cast a subtle shadow over his lower eyelid, making him look sorrowful.
Cassandra’s eyes remained cold. “Have you moved on from me?”
Sebastian nodded, his eyes red. “Yeah, I’ve moved on. I swear, this time I’m not lying”
He wasn’t lying this time because he was about to die. If he were dead, he wouldn’t feel anything for her anymore, right?
Cassandra glanced at his red–rimmed eyes, clearly not believing his words.
But she relented. After all, she had watched him grow up. How could she truly just ignore him forever?
“Come to the wedding tomorrow. Genuinely wish us well, and I’ll forgive you,” Cassandra said coldly. “Don’t try any tricks. I’m marrying Keith. You can’t change that, no matter what you do.”
Sebastian kept his eyes lowered. “I won’t do anything ”
His calmness and composed demeanor actually made her heart ache.
A restless feeling suddenly consumed her heart. Cassandra turned away, unable to keep looking at Sebastian’s face.
But Sebastian spoke up, “Cassie, I’ll come to your wedding, but can you please have a meal with me after the ceremony?
Cassandra and Keith were having a chapel wedding, meaning the ceremony would be over by noon.
“Tomorrow’s my birthday,” he continued, “and you’ve always spent it with me before. Could you do it just one last time?
“I know it’s your wedding day, and it’s an unreasonable request, but I won’t disturb your ceremony. Everything should be over by 4:00 pm. All I ask is
that you come, have a bite of cake with me, and wish me a happy birthday. That’s all I want.”
His request was so humble and so pitiful that Cassandra couldn’t bring herself to refuse, so she reluctantly agreed.
The entire night, Sebastian hardly slept. He kept his eyes open until dawn before preparing himself to attend Cassandra’s wedding
