Chapter 22
Reuben spoke ardently in the hope of convincing Cassandra to give up on the plan to freeze herself, but no matter what he said, Cassandra’s response remained the same.
“It doesn’t matter whether or not I can be successfully revived in the future. I won’t change my mind,” she declared with a steely gaze. There wasn’t even the slightest flicker of doubt in her eyes. “I’ve lost him once. I won’t lose him again.”
If it were possible to be revived in the future, then they would meet again. If not, she would accompany him in the afterlife.
The bottom of Syrannis Sea was cold, dark, and dreary, all things Sebastian was afraid of. What would he do without her by his side?
Having done all he could and said all that he had to say, Reuben had no other choice but to let Cassandra sign the agreement to allow herself to be cryonically frozen.
Cassandra breezed through all the procedures, including undergoing a medical evaluation and choosing a cryogenic chamber for herself. She completed them all in just a single day.
However, she didn’t start the cryonic process right away. Before that, she made a few final arrangements.
She took out all of her current savings and gave them to Reuben, instructing him to build a new cryogenic chamber storage facility at Galaxy Bay.
Sebastian loved stars the most, and Galaxy Bay got its name because of the stars that reflected in the water each night, making it appear like a galaxy.
Syrannis Sea was too dark and cold. She didn’t want Sebastian to be kept beneath there anymore. Once the storage facility at Galaxy Bay was completed, she and Sebastian would move in and sleep under the starry sky together.
The star she had given him could watch over them as they slumbered away.
Apart from that, Cassandra also designated a few other places, instructing Reuben to build research and storage facilities there as well. Once that was done, she climbed into her cryogenic chamber herself.
When she heard the countdown, she closed her eyes. She felt no fear at all. All she could think of was, “Don’t be scared, Seb. I’ve come to keep you company now.”
“Start lowering the temperature!”
Once Reuben gave the order, Cassandra felt a sweeping chill that washed over her. Clinging to her love for Sebastian, she lost consciousness.
Within moments, the freezing process was complete. Both Cassandra’s and Sebastian’s lives were put on hold while time ticked on for everyone else.
In the blink of an eye, five decades passed.
A significant figure once said that technology didn’t develop at a steady pace. Instead, it made bursts of explosive advancement before coming to periods of stagnation.
It took humans thousands of years to transition from ancient times to the modern era, but the technological advancements of today weren’t the result of constant growth over several millennia. Instead, modern society burst into existence in just a century.
The development of the thawing method as well as advancements in medicine happened a lot quicker than Cassandra had anticipated.
With the support of the substantial funding she had left, the cryonic research team produced a flawless revival method in just ten years. However, the foolproof cure for pancreatic cancer hadn’t been discovered yet, so Reuben didn’t arrange for Cassandra and Sebastian to be revived.
Five decades later, following the efforts of thousands and thousands of researchers and medical experts, it was finally possible to achieve a full recovery from pancreatic cancer.
At last, it was time to bring Cassandra and Sebastian back.
Reuben, the one who had frozen them, was already 89 years old.
He had retired over two decades ago, but he came to the research facility the day Cassandra and Sebastian’s cryonic revival was scheduled. He wanted to witness the reunion of the lovers after 50 years had passed.
Apart from Reuben, another mysterious guest had also arrived at the research facility to await the reunion of Cassandra and Sebastian.
