Chapter 15
Cassandra finished reading the letter. A single tear silently fell onto the paper, soaking the surface. It was only then that she realized she had been crying uncontrollably.
A life full of happiness and without regret
As Cassandra stared at the final line of the letter–Sebastian’s blessing for her–she was overwhelmed. She laughed and cried at the same time, consumed by a madness she couldn’t control
Sebastian was no longer here. How could she ever be happy?
Everything he’d witnessed before his death had been a lie. How could she possibly live without regret?
The absurdity of it all hit her a lie and a farewell left their lives steeped in regret
After a long time, Cassandra finally left the room. As she stepped out, she felt like a long time had passed.
“Ms. Yeager, we froze Mr. Lowell legally and according to all regulations, Reuben said. “Here are the documents, and Mr. Lowell signed everything personally.”
He continued, “Please don’t think of this farewell as permanent. Mr. Lowell isn’t gone. The freezing process happened in an instant, that not a single cell in his body was harmed.
and I can assure you
“Upon his freezing, we immediately monitored his life signs, and the results showed that all his vital signs are in optimal condition. His life hasn’t ended; it’s merely suspended, temporarily frozen and locked on December 12th.”
Hearing the date gave Cassandra’s heart a violent jolt.
Sebastian had actually chosen to be frozen on December 12th.
December 12th was his birthday,
Yes, it was his birthday. But what had she done on that day?
She had thrown a grand wedding for Keith and stood Sebastian up, failing to even celebrate his final birthday with him.
At this moment, Cassandra’s mind was overtaken by the memory of Sebastian pleading with her to spend his birthday with him.
“Tomorrow’s my birthday, and you’ve always spent it with me. Could you do that just one last time?
“I know it’s your wedding day, and this is an unreasonable request, but I won’t disrupt your ceremony. Everything should be over by 4:00 pm. All I ask is that you come, have a bite of cake with me, and wish me a happy birthday. That’s all I want.”
He had always been so easy to please, never asking anything of her.
The one time he did, he only wanted her to share a piece of cake and wish him a happy birthday. That was all.
Yet, she couldn’t even do that.
It felt as though a knife was relentlessly twisting in her heart, tearing at her with the most painful precision. She clutched her chest, overwhelmed by anguish.
“Although we haven’t perfected the thawing technology yet, science is always advancing.” Reuben continued, “I believe that in a few years, we’ll be able to thaw Mr. Lowell without damaging his body. And by then, cancer might even be curable.
“Not only will Mr. Lowell be successfully thawed, but his cancer will also be easily treated. It’s a win–win, much better than the painful chemotherapy, don’t you think?”
Cassandra’s head snapped up at his words. “Thaw? Yes! He can be thawed!”
She grabbed Reuben’s shoulder desperately, as it clinging to a lifeline, and shouted, “Thaw Seb now! I need to see him! I need to see him–now!”
