Chapter 13
Hearing Keith’s manic laughter, Cassandra should have been furious, but she wasn’t.
Because Keith was right. She really was the biggest fool in the world.
When she found out that Sebastian liked her, her first reaction wasn’t anger–it was joy. Because deep down, she had already…
But they could never be together. She was so much older than him. How could they possibly be together?
His attachment to her was understandable. After all, he was still just a child.
But she wasn’t. She was an adult who was much older than him. She had to be more rational than he was. She couldn’t let herself be swept away by
emotions.
She had to restrain herself, make the hard decision, and do the right thing. She cruelly cut off that budding affection before it could grow any further.
So, after the brief moment of joy, she had coldly scolded him and then found Keith to pretend to be her boyfriend to sever any feelings Sebastian had for
her.
She thought she was doing the right thing.
As the older one, she had to remain calm and controlled. Even if she loved him deeply, she couldn’t express it so easily. As his semi–guardian, she had the responsibility to guide Sebastian onto the right path.
But why? Why, after doing what she thought was the right thing, did it all lead to this?
On the day of her wedding, the person she loved most had sank to the bottom of the sea.
The pain hit her like a flood breaking through a dam, overwhelming and all–consuming. Cassandra pressed her hand to her chest, gasping for breath. What kind of hopelessness had Sebastian felt when he lay down in that cryogenic chamber?
He’d always been afraid of the dark and cold.
When he first came to the Yeager residence, he would come to her every night holding his stuffed rabbit and asking to sleep with her.
In his adorable voice, he would say that Cassandra’s body was so warm, like a big furnace, and that he would never feel cold as long as he was with her. But in the end, he chose to be in the coldest place in the world–the cryogenic chamber.
Why?
Was it because she had hurt him so much that he could no longer feel any warmth in this world, so he chose to freeze his entire existence? “Was that it, Seb?” Cassandra thought to herself.
She didn’t know the answer. She only knew that at this moment, she missed Sebastian so much that it felt like she might go crazy. She had to see him, even if it meant seeing him in that cryogenic chamber.
Her team quickly found the contact information for the cryonics research team and got the address for their facility.
Cassandra wasted no time and rushed over.
Reuben greeted her, “You must be Ms. Cassandra Yeager, right? Mr. Lowell left me a letter before he was frozen. He said that I should give it to whoever came looking for him.”
He then pulled a brown envelope from his briefcase and handed it to Cassandra.
On the envelope was Sebastian’s neat handwriting. “To Cassandra Yeager.”
Cassandra’s hand trembled. She could feel her breath tighten in her chest as she took the envelope.
So Sebastian knew she would come looking for him. She wondered if this was his punishment for her. Such a mean kid.
“Ms. Yeager, I think you may need some private time. I’ll wait outside. When you’ve read the letter and calmed down, feel free to come find me in the next office,” Reuben said, then turned to leave. He also kindly shut the door behind him.
Cassandra took a deep breath and slowly opened the envelope.
