Chapter 37
HAYDEN’S POINT OF VIEW
“How is it that we’re losing pack members at this critical time when the pack is facing a crisis, and you tell me you have no idea how it happened!” Hector shouted angrily, and the head of the soldiers lowered his head in shame.
“So now you’re shifting the blame to him? None of this would have happened if both of you had listened to our wise counsel,” Viktor replied calmly. As an Elder, arguing in front of our subjects would only make things messier.
“We were at the pack border the entire time and had no idea how this happened!” the soldier revealed, and that seemed even more suspicious.
“How many lifeless bodies were found?” I inquired, my curiosity piqued.
“Eight,” the soldier answered, and I rubbed my face in frustration.
“Eight bodies? And we have no clue what killed them. Do you all think I’m a fool?” Hector snapped, clearly frustrated.
“We will investigate the matter and uncover the reason. We ask for time to do so,” the soldier replied respectfully, bowing. “Leave my presence and get it done, I can’t stand to look at you right now,” I commanded, and he hurried out immediately. “You assured me everything would be fine once she regained her wolf, yet now you have a problem with her just because some Jena girl arrived in our pack and accused our mate of one day dividing the pack and causing chaos. It doesn’t add up to me, Viktor, it makes me think you had a hidden agenda,” Hector stated heatedly, glaring at Viktor in disbelief.
“I would do nothing to harm the pack. Whatever the Elders and I have done so far has been to protect the pack’s interests and ensure stability.”
“You don’t expect us to sit back after the prophecy was made. We’ve just recorded eight mysterious deaths. It feels like the pack is already in the chaos we’re trying to prevent,” he said, and Hector’s anger grew by the minute.
“I think this meeting has come to an end,” I tried to intervene, attempting to calm the situation, but Hector wasn’t having it. “There’s an important piece of information both of you need to know,” he stated, and I raised my eyebrows.
“What is it?” I demanded, my patience thinning.
“Grandma Shu’s body was found among the lifeless ones at the pack border. I informed the soldiers I would tell you myself, considering she was a close friend of your Luna,” he reported. Hector and I exchanged a glance, and I cursed under my breath.
Isabel will be devastated by this news. Viktor bowed and exited the room,
“She’s going to break down. That’s the only woman who has been kind to her from the start. I… don’t know how we’re supposed to tell her that her friend’s body was found at the border,” I muttered, and Hector mirrored my expression.
“We need to be the ones to tell her, bro. If she hears it from anyone else, it might only worsen things,” he said, and I nodded in agreement.
We headed toward her room together. The entire pack was already in mourning, we were certain only more trouble lay ahead.
When we reached her room, she stood up from the bed and rushed into our arms. “Hayden, Hector, I was so worried about you two. I thought something terrible had happened. I’ve been restless all day!” she expressed, her eyes shifting between us.
“Baby, we need to talk,” I told her as she rubbed her arms nervously. “Is everything alright? You’re scaring me,” she said,

“Sweetheart, what we have to say will come as a shock, and it’ll hurt, but we’re here to help you get through it,” I reassured her, and she looked between Hector and me, concerned.
“What’s going on? Why do I feel like something bad happened? I’ve been anxious since you left in a hurry, Hector. And now both of you are here…” she trailed off, beginning to cry.
“Isabel, please calm down and listen. A lot of bad things are happening in the pack lately. We lost eight pack members today, and we’re still trying to figure out how,” Hector revealed.
“Oh my goodness,” she gasped, horrified.
“But the worst part is… your friend was among them. We’re so sorry you lost Grandma Shu without the chance to say goodbye,” I explained gently, and she broke down in tears.
“No! No, please, no… I can’t believe this. Grandma Shu wouldn’t do this to me. Please, no,” she sobbed bitterly. Watching her break down was too much for me to bear.
“Sweetheart, we promise to get to the bottom of this and give them the peace they deserve,” I assured her as she cried in my arms. Hector rubbed his forehead in frustration. He was never the type to console people, showing intense emotions was not his strength.
“I knew she wouldn’t leave the pack without letting me know. I tried to stay positive, but something told me… she was in trouble! Oh my goodness,” she cried even harder, and Hector quickly left the room, unable to watch her suffering.
“Come here. Everything’s going to be alright,” I comforted her, rubbing her back gently as her body trembled from her sobs.
AUTHOR’S POINT OF VIEW
“Should I be worried?” Amelia asked, eyeing Viktor’s bare body lying next to her on the bed. They had just finished an intense session.
“I told you, I have this under control, Amy. You have nothing to worry about,” he assured her with a smirk, but she scoffed, annoyed.
“That’s what you say every time but end up doing nothing. I’m done with your empty promises,” she retorted angrily, turning away.
“Done with my nonsense? I’ve protected you so long as this affair continues. And what have you done aside from threatening to reveal us to the pack members, even when you know I have a reputation to uphold?” he shot back, and she stared at him in disbelief.
“You should have thought twice about that reputation before diving into this. I don’t want trouble while trying to bring Isabel down. That’s why I’m in your bed, Viktor,” she countered sharply.
“Threatening me is pointless at this stage. The least you can do is show me some respect, Amelia. I will ensure things go our way,” he replied calmly.
“Where did you even find Jena? How much of this prophecy is real?” she questioned, and he chuckled.
“You’re not the only one who wants Isabel out of the picture. The girl’s fate is unfortunate, she is surrounded by enemies. It pains me to see it.”
“How ironic, it pains you, yet you’re scheming against her. You’ve never been the good man you claim to be, everything about you is fake!” Amelia burst out, tying her hair into a messy bun.
“So you
won’t tell me who her other enemies are besides my family and me?” she probed, but he knew better than to divulge too much. Letting her in on everything would give her more leverage.

“When will I see you again?” she asked, pouting. Amelia knew being with a married man was wrong, but she was too invested in her hatred for Isabel to stop.
“We can’t meet for a while, I’ll let you know,” he declared, and she looked at him, her brow furrowing.
“Why?” she questioned, raising an eyebrow. Viktor got out of bed, meeting her gaze.
“Don’t ask stupid questions, Amelia. You know I have a wife, and you shouldn’t expect too much from this arrangement,” he stated, and she blinked, hurt.
“I’m serious,” she insisted, “I know we both entered this for gain, but sometimes it feels like you don’t care what happens to me. You don’t care if I… if I were to die!” she
spat.
“I have children! Daughters close to your age. I have a standing in the pack. Your complaints won’t change my mind,” he responded harshly, looking away.
“Fine! Do whatever helps you sleep at night, I don’t care,” she muttered, and he smirked.
“You don’t care?” He grinned, testing her.
“Isabel lost a friend, someone she respected. It’s the latest talk. I’d suspect you killed Grandma Shu, but I doubt you’d go that far,” he said, and her eyes widened in shock.
“Grandma Shu is dead? Why would I even hurt a woman who did nothing to me? It’s senseless!” she snapped.
“I didn’t accuse you, Amelia,” Viktor replied calmly.
“You don’t need to say it. I can tell what you’re implying,” she retorted, irritated.
“Your parents hate Isabel, Your sister loathes her. I can’t accuse you, but I can point fingers at them,” he said, and she frowned.
“Excuse me!” she snapped angrily.
“Let’s be realistic, if one of them killed Grandma Shu, then we have a lot to be worrying about and you know it,” he remarked, and she looked away.
“Grandma Shu has a history of being disliked by most people in the pack. With that kind of reputation anyone would have if they killed her, the big question is who killed Grandma Shu?”
