Chapter 21
HECTOR’S POV

“Make sure the soldiers are on standby. The pack borders should be protected at all costs. We are not about to take chances.”
“Whoever attacked the werewolves at the border had something in mind. We won’t let them succeed again,” I declared, and the gamma bowed before making his way out of my office.
“Up until now, the pack doctor is unable to tell what attacked the werewolves. The bite looks mysterious. At first, I thought something like that could have been caused by rogues, but we were wrong,” Hayden revealed, as he dropped a black and white photo of the dead bodies.
“The Elders are on our necks, they do not approve of Isabel. It might lead to an even bigger problem after the curse is broken.”
“First the deaths, and now a dispute between us and the Elders could push the pack into further chaos. We must be very careful in our approach, brother,” I replied, and he nodded.
“Her birthday is forthcoming. I believe everything will fall into place if we protect her with everything we’ve got,” Hayden said, and I sighed as I looked away.
Protecting Isabel is the most important point of action. One wrong move, and we might get stuck with this curse for life, which is something we should avoid at all costs.
“I have other things to attend to, brother. Talk to you later,” Hayden announced as he left the office. I stayed back to get some work done before leaving the office, too. I had something to do outside the pack house.
“Welcome, Alpha Hector,” the driver bowed as I got into my car.
“Take me to…” I trailed off, and he nodded as he drove off. My mind spun with different thoughts.
We arrived at the restaurant, and I got out of the car. The minute I made my way into the restaurant, I could feel the eyes of pack members on me. It’s not every day my brother and I take a stroll.
I wasn’t just taking a stroll, I was here to meet one of the Elders, if not the most respected one among them. Elder Viktor has always been one of the wisest and most influential. If we can get him to take our side, then we have nothing to worry about.
“Alpha Hector,” he greeted as he stood up to take my hand.
“I’m glad you honoured my invitation, Elder Viktor. After the way the last conference meeting ended, I had low hopes,” I began as I sat down calmly.
“You and your brother are young men with great vision for the pack. We are the elders who have the goodwill of the pack at heart. We do not mean to argue and cause problems,” he explained calmly.
“It’s about Isabel and the recent happenings in the pack. You are a wise man, Viktor. What is your counsel on this?” I asked, my eyes staring directly into his face, reading his every action.
“The Isabel girl seems like a dark cause, Hector. She had six mates before you and your brother Hayden. If anything, that alone is a bad reputation for the clan. We will be treated as a joke he voiced out, and I looked away, then back at his face.
“What if there’s more to Isabel than what meets the eye?” I questioned.
“Hayden believes she has potential. How about we try to see what happens after the curse is broken? There are a lot of questions running through my mind right now,” I revealed, and he stared at me calmly.
“Like, what if she turns for the first time after the curse is broker I haven’t thought about that… I trailed off. The look on his

face showed he was also interested in finding out what would happen.

“We can give that a try, but for now, I cannot bring up a case in her favour. The other Elders will think I’m being biased,” he explained, and I understood his point.
“I understand, and whatever decision you make in the end, I hope it’s in favour of the pack,” I added, and he nodded.
“Permission to take my leave, Alpha Hector. I’ve got other things to attend to,” he announced, and I nodded as he made his way out of the restaurant. I ordered coffee and just sat down, scrolling through my workpad.
“Alpha Hector,” I recognized the voice immediately. Even without raising my head, her voice irritated me almost instantly.
“Evelyn,” I smirked, and she smiled.
“What a pleasant surprise! It’s not every day we see the Alpha of the pack right in front of us,” she said, and sat down with a smile that made me feel uncomfortable.
“I did not ask you to join me, Evelyn. It’s only right that you seek permission before making yourself welcome where you’re not welcomed,” I declared while gritting my teeth in anger, and her cheeks burned from embarrassment.
“Oh, pardon my manners. It’s just that I she said, and I raised my eyebrows.

your sister? I thought she was blood?” I asked, and she stared at me, tongue–tied.
“I did not bring up Isabel. I want us to talk about us. Isabel seems to have Hayden tied around her fingers, but I believe you can see through that cursed girl. We can help him see the light… she trailed off, trying to play on my intelligence.

“And believe
you are
the light Hayden and I need to break the curse?” I asked, and she smiled.
“I’m strong, beautiful, talented. What else do you need?” she asked, and I bent towards her. She sucked in her breath at our close proximity.
“I want you to stay away from me. Let’s start with that first. Have a nice day ahead, Evelyn,” I sneered at her intimidatingly, standing up as I walked out of the restaurant.
ISABEL’S POV
“I’m beginning to think we should have asked Mr. Philip instead of trying to find answers by ourselves,” Gina said in regret as she dropped the books in her hands and adjusted her glasses.
“Calm down, Gina. Maybe we should come back some other time. You look very tired,” I stated in concern, and she shook her head.
“It’s only a matter of time before Lady Lucia finds out we have access to this place and uses it against us. We have to act smart now that we have the chance,” she urged me, and I took a deep breath.
She remarked. “If you don’t trust the librarian for now, I have access to one of the oldest members of the pack. If I’m not mistaken, she might be able to help us with the books.”
“The question is, how do we get the books out of the library if we don’t consult Mr. Philip?” I asked, and she stared at me.
You are the Luna…” she trailed off.
“Soon to be Luna,” I corrected, and she chuckled.
“It doesn’t matter. You are Luna. That means he can’t ask you why you’re leaving with books.” She assured me.
“It’s his duty to be confidential about what the royals do when they visit the library. That’s not something to worry about,”

Gina added, and I nodded. It’s a good thing she’s my handmaid, the girl knows everything I don’t. She’s like my walking handbook.
“Thanks, Gina,” I muttered with a smile, and she bowed in respect.

“Meet me at midnight,” I instructed as we made our way out of the library. Maybe, just maybe, we were not checking in the right direction.

“Isabel,” Hayden called as I made my way to my room. Thank goodness Gina didn’t join me, how would I have explained my possession of the books about curses?
“Isabel,” he called again, and I snapped out of my thoughts.
“Alpha Hayden,” I replied with a smile.
“You seem distracted. Are you alright?” he asked worriedly.
“I’m fine. You and your brother have been busy lately. I’ve noticed it’s getting worse,” I teased, and his eyes softened.
“It’s not our intention to keep you lonely. There’s just been a lot going on in the pack. Some werewolves were found dead at the pack borders. We thought they were killed by rogues, but it turns out it’s something else,” he explained as we walked together.
“Have you found out what it is?” I asked curiously.
“For now, there’s no clue. But we will find out what’s causing those deaths, Isabel. It’s only a matter of time,” he replied
“Hector,” I called as he made his way up the stairs, and he turned to us.
“Isabel,” he mumbled, before walking toward me.
“I’m hungry,” Hayden said, breaking the uncomfortable silence that filled the air when his brother joined us. Although Hector was trying to be nice to me, but he still couldn’t ignore the fact that I’m the wolfless girl.
From what I’ve heard, he doesn’t do well with new
people, and it will take time before he warms up to me.
“How about I make something for you guys in the kitchen?” I suggested excitedly.
“The kitchen? Isabel, we have servants to do the cooking,” Hector mentioned, rolling his eyes.
“Can you even cook?” Hayden asked, amused.
“Of course, I can cook. Not all of us have royal privileges. I’ve been cooking since I was 8,” I revealed, and they looked surprised at my revelation.
We walked toward the kitchen, and even the servants looked surprised to see them there for the first time.
Hector leaned on the door while Hayden made himself comfortable on one of the chairs. “You guys can’t sit and do nothing, you have to help around the kitchen while I cook,” I instructed them, and I handed aprons and caps to them and helped them put them on.
“Oh, I’m sure I look like a clown right now,” Hector said, and I burst out laughing.
“You guys
look cute if you
ask me,” I uttered with a smile.
“Cute? Come on, Isabel, we’re supposed to look handsome and sexy, not cute,” Hayden replied, which only made me laughi harder.

“One of you can help with the vegetables…” I trailed off, looking between the two.
“What am I supposed to do?” Hector asked, sounding completely clueless.
“Roast them. They look like something we should roast,” Hayden suggested, holding them up with a grin.

“What?” Hector looked confused, glancing at Hayden, then back at me as his eyes held in mine for a few seconds. Hayden cleared his throat, making us snap from our gaze.
“Oh my goodness, you don’t roast vegetables, you chop them!” I told me, and we all broke into laughter.
