Chapter 8

Nicole nodded, suppressing the darkness in her eyes. “I’m beginning to suspect that the hospital is attempting to frame me for the medication error. And with the director stopping me like this, I can’t help but wonder if they’re trying to stop me from uncovering the truth. That’s why I need your help.” The attorney’s expression turned uneasy. “Ms. Lawrence, let’s be real. I don’t think that you can take on Silverwood Hospital alone. Honestly, taking this case would only cause trouble for us. I think it’s best if you go with another firm.” She instantly argued, “Aren’t you lawyers supposed to fight for the rights of the people?” “Taking on a case like this would destroy our careers. Ms. Lawrence, we’ve got families to feed, too.” After leaving the law firm, Nicole visited several other law firms across Silverwood, only to be turned down repeatedly. Nobody was willing to take on her case. Clutching her phone tightly, her fingers slowly curled into a fist. She refused to believe that someone wasn’t pulling the strings behind the scenes. She wondered if it could be Jacob. Would he really go this far just to force her to come crawling back, begging him for help like some desperate lapdog? Light rain started to pour from the sky. Nicole shivered when the cold droplets hit her face and jolted her back into reality. She pressed her lips together and walked toward the bus stop to catch a cab home. Unbeknownst to her, someone had been observing from a distance the entire time. Aaron was on his way to a business trip. He had already passed by, but when he saw Nicole, he ordered Lance to stop the car. His lips curled slightly as he watched her run around law firms looking for legal advice. At the very least, he thought that she wasn’t stupid. However, Jacob, the heir of the Escobar family, was wealthy and powerful, while Nicole had nothing. Trying to fight him would be a losing battle. Aaron’s gaze followed her unconsciously. He saw her ducking under the bus shelter and could see her delicate figure outlined by her soaked clothes. His breath quickened. As he narrowed his eyes, something stirred in their depths. “Mr. Compton, should we offer Ms. Lawrence a hand?” Lance asked. If Aaron were to help her now, Nicole wouldn’t appreciate it. So, why bother? His expression reverted to its regular indifference. “There’s no need for that. Let’s go.” “Yes, Mr. Compton.” … Meanwhile, a woman stood at the entrance of the medical testing center but was once again blocked from entering. Monica finally lost her patience. She ripped off her sunglasses, her gaze keen as she demanded, “Do you know who I am? I’m the heiress of the Boyd family! Why can’t I check the DNA results on behalf of my mother?” The staff remained composed, but their attitude was firm. “Ms. Boyd, I understand your feelings. But Mrs. Boyd explicitly instructed us not to let anybody in to prevent interference with the results. We are professionals and will ensure every step is handled precisely. Please trust us.” Monica’s expression clouded. She dropped her voice, saying, “I am her daughter. Do you really think she wouldn’t know I’ve arrived? I understand that you’re just doing your job, but will this help change your mind?” She stepped closer and quietly took a check from her handbag, handing it over. Nobody could resist that amount she was offering. Why go the long way when money could open doors? Yet, the staff didn’t even glance at the check. Their resolve didn’t waver. “I’m sorry, Ms. Boyd. That’s against procedure. We can’t make exceptions. It’s raining, and it’s getting darker. Please go home.” Seeing the unmoved staff, Monica bit her lip and trembled with fury. She turned sharply on her heels while her assistant followed along, carrying an umbrella. “Ms. Boyd, please don’t stand in the rain. Otherwise, Mrs. Boyd will worry about you!” In the car, Monica slammed the door and fixed her gaze on the medical testing center. Since they refused to let her in, she decided to find another way. Heidi was desperate to get the actual result, but Monica would ensure that she never accepted Nicole. She was determined not to let anyone take her place away. Snapping out of her thoughts, Monica’s gaze turned cold as she asked, “How’s the situation at the hospital?” Her assistant said, “I’ve taken care of the medical director and the department head. They won’t side with Nicole. Today, she went around all the law firms, but no one dared to take her case.” This was the only good news Monica had received that day. She grinned as she thought, “Nicole, what will you fight me with?” Monica would never back down, even if she weren’t the true heiress of the Boyd family. Since this started wrong, she figured that she might as well keep going until the end. … Meanwhile, Nicole had just arrived home. The moment she walked in, she saw Jacob sitting on her couch again. She was soaked from head to toe and utterly numb to the cold. Upon seeing him, her eyes stung from the tears pooled in them, and her face reddened from fury. “Jacob, are you done yet?” He sat there calmly and stared at her drenched state. “You’re overestimating yourself.” His tone became even more sarcastic. Did she genuinely think that leaving him would lead to a promising future? Nicole felt a shiver run down her spine. She clenched her fist tightly. He was indeed the one pulling the strings, ensuring that no law firm would take on her case against the hospital. A wave of hatred surged in her chest, and rage flared in her eyes. For the first time, she lost control of her emotions. Fighting back the pain inside, she spoke with a powerful and unyielding voice. “Jacob, whatever happens to me has nothing to do with you. So what if you’re a wealthy heir? Don’t forget that I dumped you!” At her words, his expression shifted, and rage flashed in his eyes. “How many chances do I have to give you before you learn to appreciate them?” he shouted. His expression was clouded with rage as he stepped forward. His contempt-filled eyes examined her from head to toe. “You don’t even have a job anymore. What have you got left? Do you really think you can take on the hospital?” Jacob scoffed, grabbed her chin, and burst out laughing. “I’m not done playing with you yet. If you agree to become my mistress, I’ll solve all of your problems. How about that? Does that sound like a good deal?” His fingertips caressed her cheek as he leaned in to kiss her as usual. But before he could come near, Nicole pushed him away fiercely. Jacob stumbled back, completely unprepared. She immediately pushed the door open and dashed out, calling the police. “Jacob, this is my house. You are trespassing, and I have every right to report you!” He eventually snapped. “I will not put up with this any longer!” He chased her, but she turned and knocked on her neighbor’s door. She knew that a young couple was living there. She had previously helped them whenever they had minor issues at night, saving them late trips to the hospital.
