Chapter 11
Nicole felt slightly embarrassed. Her voice was awkward as she said, “Mom, let me make you and Monica a cup of tea.” Monica feigned innocence. “Nicole, it’s fine. Mom’s not used to regular tea. We’re actually here tonight to take you home. You don’t have to keep living in a dump like this.” Nicole looked up and met her sparkling eyes. But no matter how bright they appeared, she couldn’t ignore the hostility hidden deep within them. She didn’t argue. Instead, she turned her attention to Heidi. Heidi’s gaze was just as eager. “Nicole, would you be willing to come home with me? It looks like you’re having a hard time living here. Come back to the Boyd residence, and let me take care of you.” Nicole couldn’t remain unmoved after hearing such a statement. She was the Boyd family’s long-lost daughter. All these years, she had wished to find her parents. Now that she had found them, how could she not wish to return? Stunned, she remained still before finally nodding. “Okay.” She entered the bedroom and began loading her clothes into a suitcase. There weren’t many of her personal belongings remaining in this flat. After breaking up with Jacob, he took nothing with him. The shoes, bags, and clothes she had given him weren’t worth as much to him as one of his tailored suits. Since Nicole didn’t want them around to distress her further, she packed them and sold them to a recycler. Even after three years, everything she owned fit into one bag. It sounded pitiful. At this moment, Monica’s scornful voice sounded from behind her. “Nicole, maybe you shouldn’t bring all this trash back. I’ll help you get new stuff once you’re back home.” Nicole couldn’t stand another word of her fake sweetness. She looked up, her expression frigid. “These items are important to me. You seem to care, yet everything you say is filled with scorn. What are your true intentions?” Monica hadn’t anticipated being called out so straightforwardly. Her expression hardened, and she sorrowfully turned to Heidi. “Mom, I think that Nicole misunderstood me. I just want her to live a better life and do not wish to see her suffer.” “Monica, your sister cannot change her mind overnight. These things are important to her, so let her take them with her. It’s not like the house lacks space.” Monica instantly lowered her head, her voice tinged with a sob. “I’m sorry for not being thoughtful.” Heidi wasn’t actually furious with Monica. After all, Monica had always been obedient and understanding. She was extremely proud of her in every way. “Let me help you.” Heidi smiled as she walked up and helped Nicole pack. Later, Nicole followed Heidi and Monica back to the Boyd residence. When they entered the house, Monica naturally ordered the maids to bring them coffee, hand towels, and snacks. However, Nicole felt out of place. The environment felt foreign and extravagant to her. Everything was gold-trimmed and elegantly designed, exuding richness and sophistication. Every corner of the house radiated grandeur. It was a world she had never imagined. And now, it was her home. Heidi took her hand and led her to change her shoes before instructing the maids to get her a new change of clothes. Only then did Nicole realize that she was still wearing a 30-dollar T-shirt and a pair of jeans. She stood out like a sore thumb there. As Heidi led her further inside the house, she noticed a framed portrait on the coffee table. With a single glance, her body stiffened. Even her blood seemed to freeze. Was the man in the photo the CEO of Boyd Corporation? She couldn’t believe the patient of the emergency surgery she had handled that day was her father. Monica caught her gaze and quickly said, “Dad’s still in a coma at the hospital because of that medication incident. His health hasn’t been the best lately, and because of your mistake, he can’t be discharged. I’m so worried that something might happen to him.” Nicole had long sensed Monica’s hostility. And now, as those words were spoken, Heidi’s smile faltered slightly. Heidi wanted to know why Nicole had done so, too. Nicole’s heart ached when she saw the look in her mother’s eyes, but her gaze remained firm as she stated, “Mom, I wasn’t the one who changed Dad’s medicine. I’ll prove my innocence.” Heidi furrowed her brow. She began to doubt herself after seeing Nicole’s resolve. Hence, she pulled Nicole to sit on the couch and asked her to explain everything. Nicole explained the situation calmly and logically. Even when accused and misunderstood, she didn’t lose her composure. Monica became unsettled when she saw this. Her hands curled into fists in frustration, a light layer of sweat forming on her palms. Nicole seized the opportunity and played the audio recording she had secretly taken of Robert and Nigel talking. Heidi’s expression turned cold when she heard the hospital leaders insult her daughter. “I can’t believe the director and department head of Silverwood Hospital are so foul-mouthed! How could they scapegoat you without conducting a proper investigation?” Meanwhile, Monica’s expression turned uglier. She hadn’t anticipated Nicole to be so cunning by using the recording to gain Heidi’s compassion. It seemed like she had really underestimated her! Nicole cast Monica a glance, catching every flicker of expression on her face. With a calm demeanor, she said, “Mom, I’ve already collected some evidence. I plan to file a lawsuit against Silverwood Hospital to clear my name.” Upon hearing this, Heidi looked at her with even more affection and pride. She was proud that Nicole had grown resilient and didn’t crumble under pressure. However, Nicole’s statement made Monica panic. She couldn’t help but wonder what evidence Nicole had—and whether it could ruin her. She couldn’t help but interject, saying, “Our family holds shares in Silverwood Hospital. If you sue them, our company stock might be affected. There’s no point in hurting the company to get revenge. You should let it go.” Nicole gave Monica a sharp look as if daring her to keep exposing her true motives. “Boyd Corporation is a well-known company with a great reputation for public service. If we do own shares in Silverwood Hospital, that gives me even more reason to clear my name. The hospital can only improve its management by eliminating this internal corruption. I’m sure you wouldn’t want an institution backed by our family to be a place full of lies and injustice. If we don’t fix this now, a bigger scandal later could make it impossible to withdraw our investment in time.” Heidi nodded in agreement. Her eyes were filled with admiration as she looked at Nicole. She made a decision right then and there. “Nicole, now that you’ve said that, I believe you should do everything possible to uncover the truth. I’ve seen your record at the hospital—you’ve worked harder than most since graduating. That’s why I refuse to believe you’d make a mistake like switching medications.”
