The others instinctively tumed their heads, only to see Maura ruching on the floor, her arms wrapped around her head. trembling uncontrollably. It was afternoon, and the sun cast a goblen light across the landd, Yet, Maura’s face remained pale, filled with terror and unease. They wondered if Maura was truly losing her mind.
Some people immediately took a few steps back, widening the distance between them and Maura
Stacy was furious. She shot a fierce glare at the servant who had quickly distanced herself, thinking. Maura is more important right now. Ill deal with her later
The servant, realizing she had been caught, looked somewhat embarrassed.
“What nonsense are you spouting! Maura is your sister. How could you wish her ill like this Stacy knelt down, pulling Maura into her arms, gently wiping the sweat from Maura’s forehead as she whispered, “Remember what I told you? This is just a temporary setback. Don’t worry. Sooner or later, I will settle this score for you with interest”
Stacy knew meeting Aurora would be inevitable once they returned to Crawford Manor. She had already prepared Maura for this for a long time, carefully laying out all the pros and cons, Behind closed doors, they could act however they liked, but they needed to keep up appearances in public.
Yet, the moment Maura saw Aurora, she still lost her composure.
It seemed the shadow Aurora had cast over Maura was deep and lasting. Just the sight of Aurora’s face or her voice was enough to undo all the mental preparation Maura had built up.
Stacy gently patted Maura’s shoulder, calming her down, then turned to Aurora and said, “The doctor said Maura suffered head injury in the car accident and still hasn’t fully recovered from the concussion. She can’t stand for long, so we’ll head inside first. She then turned to Maura. “Come on, Maura, let’s go inside.”
Aurora, hands folded in front of her, leaned in to get a closer look at Maura’s face as Maura passed by, noticing how Maura shrank back, burying her head deeper into Stacy’s arms, too scared to even glance in her direction. She smiled, clearly satisfied.
Aurora reached out and casually brushed a strand of Maura’s hair aside, feeling Maura’s stiff, trembling body under her touch. With a sly smirk, she remarked, “It seems Maura’s accident was more serious than I thought. After all those eight or nine days in the hospital, that concussion of hers still hasn’t healed”
Seeing Maura’s face drenched in cold sweat, Aurora, in mock benevolence, decided to let Maura be and turned her attention to Jaxon instead. “Dad, Leopold was completely out of line.
“Everyone knows that Maura is the treasure of our family, yet after the car accident, he walked away without a scratch while Maura ended up bedridden for days. We can’t keep that driver. It’s time to find a replacement”
Jaxon and Stacy had been visiting the hospital these past few days, while Leopold hadn’t shown up to work even once. Aurora had to take taxis to school, and when she tried calling him, he couldn’t be bothered to answer. A driver so lazy and neglectful was better off being replaced anyway,
“How can this be?‘ Stacy thought. Her heart skipped a beat, and her gaze toward Aurora immediately changed. Leopold is my man. I’m counting on him to use the same trick to cause an accident with Aurora while driving her around. If Leopold leaves, training a new driver will take time, and Maura can’t be left unattended.
‘Even worse, Aurora might turn the new driver against me. What if Aurora and the new driver team up against Maura! No, the driver can’t be replaced.
“Aurora, Leopold has worked for our family for five or six years. If we suddenly fire him, wouldn’t that be disheartening? People might talk, and our reputation could suffer.” Stacy tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, carefully maintaining the dignified composure of a rich lady.

Aurora had only mentioned it offhand, but the more Stacy resisted, the more determined she became.

“It Leopold could cause an accident with Maura, what’s to say he couldn’t cause one with me? Firing a reckless driver, who would dare criticize that?” Aurora caught the brief flash of calculation in Stacy’s eyes when Leopold’s name was mentioned. She thought. Tmph, trying to pull the same trick again? Let’s see if I agree this time.
Aurora said, “And if anyone dares to gossip, let them hire Leopold themselves.”
Stacy thought. “Who would be foolish enough to hire a driver with a record like his? No one would be that reckless with their own safety. She was left speechless, glaring at Aurora in frustration
Aurora thought that by making such a strong case, Jaxon would follow her suggestion and fire Leopold. But to her surprise, Jaxon still sided with Stacy.
Jaxon said, “Leopold has worked with us for so many years. Even if he’s made a mistake, we can’t just throw him out. I’m not that cold–hearted to do something like that.”
Aurora’s expression grew cold. “So, what you’re saying. Dad, is that Leopold is perfectly healthy, but I still have to hail taxis to school for a whole week? What’s the point of keeping a driver who ignores his employer?
“Or is Leopold now Maura’s personal chauffeur? If so, why don’t you hire me a driver to take me to and from school?”
Jaxon’s face tightened, and a surge of irritation rose within him. He thought, ‘What has Leopold been doing? Sure, I had mentioned to him privately that Aurora wasn’t used to city life and cars, so it wasn’t necessary to pick her up every day. But eight or nine days without a word? That was excessive.
Maybe he was injured during the accident as well. I’ll call him later to check” Jaxon mumbled dismissively.
Aurora sneered, utterly unbothered by his half–hearted excuse. “Oh, yes, he must be suffering from severe emotional trauma. He’s been traveling with his wife to recover.”
Jaxon was stunned. “How do you know that?”
He thought, ‘Did she hire someone to investigate Leopold? Has she been looking into me as well? Who did she hire, and what did they uncover? Damn it, why can’t she just let things be? Why is she so calculating and relentless?
Why hasn’t she learned to be gentle and understanding like Maura? Instead, she flaunts those bad habits she picked up in the countryside.
Unaware of the storm brewing in Jaxon’s mind, Aurora raised her phone and opened a page. Just look at Leopold’s Instagram. Yesterday, he was sunbathing, and today he’s surfing! Wow, he’s really living the life. None of us can compare to
him.
Jaxon leaned in to see for himself. The image showed a relaxed Leopold with a bright smile, and the caption read “Thank my boss for giving me time off“.
“Dad, Aurora continued, I’ve still got a while before summer vacation, and yet he’s already on holiday?”
Jaxon’s pride had been repeatedly wounded. Even with his thick skin, he couldn’t endure it any longer. Angrily, he declared, I’m firing him.”
He thought, “I’ve been tirelessly worrying about Maura’s condition in the hospital and am mentally exhausted. Maura’s accident was Leopold’s fault, and instead of reflecting on his mistakes, Leopold is off on vacation. This is absolutely unacceptable.
Aurora turned off her phone, tapping it lightly against her cheek before turning to Stacy with an innocent smile.
Stacy thought. That little brat is provoking me? She’s provoking me? How dare she‘
