Chapter 9
I stayed until Ethan was pushed out of the operating room.
He, who used to be lively and spirited, now had a pale mouth, and his breathing was very weak.
Ashamed, Sienna had already left.
Seeing Ethan like this, Corey’s mother cried and rushed over, mumbling that I was being ungrateful.
There was only one reason that I was still there. I wanted Corey to sign the divorce agreement.
Corey’s eyes were tinged with a hint of pain, and his tone was bitter. “Can’t you stay for Ethan’s sake?
“His life is still in danger. How could you divorce me now?”
I emphasized, “It wasn’t me who put his life in danger.”
Corey’s mother ran over angrily and grabbed Corey’s hand.
“Sign it, Corey!
“If it weren’t for your dad forcing you back then, how could you possibly have married her?
“Because this marriage, you drink yourself into a stupor every day, almost thinking about committing suicide.
“Now, you can get a divorce. Don’t let her ruin you anymore.”

“Mom!” Corey interrupted anxiously, and his eyes were full of flusters, “Don’t talk nonsense.”
I stared at Corey’s distressed face, and suddenly, I felt a sharp pang in my heart as if a string in my head had snapped.
Suddenly, I remembered our wedding night. He said to me with a calm expression, “Let’s just live our lives.”
At that moment, the light was cast on his perfect profile, with his eyelashes drooping, hiding the emotions in his eyes.
I thought he was willing to give our relationship a try.
Unexpectedly, he was in despair at that time.
“Lena.” Corey looked at me in panic and caution. His voice. slightly trembled. “What my mom said wasn’t true. It wasn’t
because…”
“Sign it.” I had no energy to think anymore, just obsessively repeating these two words.
“Sign it.”
Corey took the paper.
I thought he would be relieved, relaxed, and happy.
But unexpectedly, he suddenly got a bit angry and tossed the signed divorce agreement on the ground.
Then, he gritted his teeth. “Lena, you’d better not regret this!”
I took a look at Ethan who was already awake, and I left.
He was just a little boy, no matter what. He might be sensible and intelligent, but the sickness had rendered him vulnerable.
He stared blankly at the ceiling. When he sensed my gaze, he turned- to look at me.
Tears immediately fell from his weak and pained face.
Ethan opened his mouth and said, “Mom.”
Then, he showed a gaze full of anticipation.
After all, no matter how outrageous his actions were in the past, he could always get my attention by showing weakness and calling me “Mom“. I would let go of all my anger and grudges and hug him tightly.
But now, I wiped away the tears that had unexpectedly appeared on my face, and then I shaped my lips to tell him, “Don’t call me mom again.
“I would never be your mom again.”
Ethan suddenly became panicked and then calmed down.
His eyes remained their usual cold and bland gaze.
It was as if I were just a stranger.
I could see the determination in his eyes.
I thought Corey and Ethan were both weird.

They both had an inexplicable confidence that I could never let go of the good life in the Skye family and leave.
Little did they know that I never cared about the material stuff.
I booked an air ticket to Cloudrea for the same night. The moment I step onto the plane, my mood became much more joyful.
I could finally live for myself.
