Chapter 25
Under Fabian’s leadership, the Carnegie Group slowly took control of half of Boston’s
economy. He began expanding the business internationally, with the first stop being Paris,
France.
The ridiculous rumors that Fabian had caused while searching for Angelina were no longer spoken of by anyone.
Not only that, but those same people began to praise Fabian’s devotion to Angelina, as if they had completely forgotten that Fabian had cheated on her before their wedding and caused an outsider to become pregnant.
With enough power in his hands, slanderous words quickly disappeared.
Fabian personally experienced the benefits of power, but he didn’t feel any happiness from it.
Or rather, since the day Angelina left, Fabian no longer had the right to feel happy.
He had wronged Angelina, and according to his promise, he was supposed to live a lonely life, with happiness being an unreachable thing for him.
Fabian hadn’t paid much attention to Angelina’s whereabouts for a long time. He only occasionally heard that her new boyfriend, Antolin, was from a well–known family in Paris, and that was how he learned about Angelina’s new life.
Fabian opened an Italian restaurant near where Angelina lived, serving only one kind of
noodle dish.
After trying it once, Angelina immediately recognized the familiar taste.
That was also the first time Fabian saw Angelina from a distance in the kitchen.
Seeing Angelina so lovingly interacting with Antolin, Fabian’s eyes became somewhat sore, but he couldn’t bring himself to look away because he knew that opportunities to see Angelina in person were rare.
However, after that single visit, Angelina rarely came back to the restaurant. After all, she no longer liked the taste from before.
But surprisingly, the noodles were favored by other French customers, and with the bustling crowds of Italians, the restaurant didn’t lack patrons.
For the Carnegie Group, this restaurant was just a small business, but Fabian would visit for a few days each month.
Occasionally, Fabian would spot Angelina walking past the restaurant. Sometimes, he wouldn’t see her for several days in a row.
But he never once approached her to say hello.
Since Angelina didn’t want to see him, Fabian wanted to respect her wish.
In the small courtyard in front of the restaurant, Fabian planted a row of pear trees, his favorite snow pears that Angelina loved.
In the fall, when Angelina’s throat was always prone to dryness, Fabian had the restaurant’s manager send pears to every shop in the area.
The
pears sent to Angelina’s place were the best ones Fabian had personally picked.
The pears were returned to Fabian, untouched, along with a piece of news.
Angelina and Antolin were getting married.
Fabian didn’t show much reaction, but his reddened eyes betrayed
Upon hearing this news, Fabi his true emotions.
On the wedding day, Fabian hid behind the crowd. As Antolin recited his vows, Fabian was the first to shed tears, even before Angelina did.
From that moment on, the girl who had once loved him so much would never belong to him
again.
After an unknown number of springs and autumns, when Fabian saw Angelina walking past the restaurant again, he noticed her slightly protruding belly, with Antolin nervously protecting her.
After Angelina gave birth, Fabian adopted a girl in the country who resembled Angelina
somewhat.
He had discharged himself from the hospital before fully recovering and threw himself into work, and the damage left behind could not be healed by any medicine, no matter how good..
But he still traveled back and forth between Boston and Paris, with his health deteriorating
day by day.
He had made so many mistakes, and now, having the opportunity to see Angelina from at distance, he was already content.
