Chapter 5

Her cheeks flushed with a shy, rosy tint as she spoke, leaving no room for misinterpretation. But in response to her forwardness, Dominick said nothing, his silence hanging in the air.
I couldn’t understand why he was hesitating. He was already set on divorcing me anyway, wasn’t he? Now seemed like the perfect chance to get together with Madison without a hitch.
But what I didn’t expect was that he patted Madison on the head, pulled her hands off him, and said, “I’m sorry, Maddy. I need to head home for a bit.”
Madison clearly hadn’t expected Dominick to refuse her either. She bit her bottom lip awkwardly and said, “Dom, are you… disgusted with me or something?”
Dominick frowned, “Maddy, don’t overthink it. I just remembered I’ve got something to take care of.”
Madison couldn’t stop him from leaving. And as for me? I was dying to know what exactly he had to do.
I followed Dominick all the way back–back to the home we once shared. Inside the house, the air was heavy with a sour, musty smell. He wandered aimlessly, as though searching for something, before stopping in front of the nightstand in the bedroom.

On the nightstand sat an old photo of the two of us. In the picture, I was clinging to his back, and my face lit up with the happiest smile.

Dominick stared intently at the photo of me as if he were trying to recall something. After a long pause, he slammed the frame back onto the cabinet with a thud, muttering bitterly, “Dead? You loved me so much–there’s no way you’d just die. Hah, Peyton, I know you too well. All of this is just another trick to win me back, isn’t it?”
Dominick sounded so sure of himself, but I couldn’t help but smile, a broken, sorrowful smile. Dominick, do you really know me at all?
