My mom hung up the phone decisively, cutting through Dominick’s roaring. He probably never thought that something so small could throw him so completely off balance.
Back at Madison’s place, Dominick still couldn’t get a grip on himself. He stormed restlessly around the room, muttering to himself like he was presenting a case in court, “She’s pushing it now! How dare she give me the silent treatment for this long? She’s clearly just hiding to avoid the divorce! Peyton, I know exactly what your weakness is! Playing dead now? I really underestimated you before…”
As I stood beside Dominick, my smile twisted with bitter sorrow. Yes, my weakness–it was the family I worked so hard to build and the marriage I fought to maintain. I treasured what little I had, yet he trampled over it so easily.
Madison noticed the situation and hurried over to calm him. “Dom, don’t get so worked up; it’s bad for your health. Peyton’s probably just upset because she knows you’re here with me… Just like last time when she pushed me. I’m sure she didn’t mean it. If it really helps, I’ll go and apologize to her, okay?”
She pouted dramatically, her voice soft and pitiful as she curled into Dominick’s arms. He held her, though his expression remained dark and brooding. “What right does she have to be upset?” he snapped. “She even said she was dying. But someone who loves me that much–how could she possibly die? I’ve

Dominick’s furious muttering eventually faded, his face cooling as his thoughts seemed to drift elsewhere. His brow furrowed, his hand rubbing at his temples as if deep in thought.
Feeling him relax his arms, Madison tugged gently at the hem of his shirt. “Dom, don’t let these petty things get to you. It’s getting late; let’s just go to bed. Dom, don’t sleep on the couch tonight, okay? How about… you sleep on the bed with me?”
