Chapter 53
Melody suddenly couldn’t bring herself to look at the photos anymore. She thanked Alexis, confirmed their next shooting date, and was about to get some rest.
Just then, Alexis reminded her to accept the payment.
The 500 dollars had already been transferred, but Melody hadn’t accepted it yet.
“If you don’t take it, I’ll feel bad,” Alexis said. “I might not dare to book you again. Photography isn’t exactly easy work, and you’ll also need to maintain your figure and take care of your skin for the shoots.”
So, Melody accepted the payment.
But then, her thoughts drifted back to the misunderstanding with Jeremy downstairs.
After hesitating, she opened their chat and slowly typed, “Sorry, I really didn’t mean it that way just now. I was just surprised to run into you at the hotel. It was my fault for phrasing it poorly.”
As expected, Jeremy didn’t reply.
Melody then scrolled up through their past conversations–almost every message was from her.
Jeremy mostly didn’t respond or simply sent a blank space as acknowledgment.
As Melody looked at those empty replies scattered among her carefully worded messages, she fell silent.
It was as if she was only worth the effort of pressing the spacebar to Jeremy.
The next day, Melody saw the visiting professor from Averland at the hospital.
Jeremy and Krystal stood beside him, conversing effortlessly in Averic. They looked like the perfect pair.
Then, she overheard people whispering nearby.
“I heard it was Tessa who invited this professor here. Dr. Chesson and Dr. Finnigan have the best Averic among everyone else in our department. Besides, Dr. Finnigan even did an exchange program abroad.”
“The chief always liked Dr. Chesson. Dr. Finnigan is impressive too. We can’t even hold a basic conversation compared to them. The medical terminology is way too difficult.”
Melody pressed her lips together, lost in thought.
Suddenly, Tiffany nudged her and whispered, “Melody, I remember your Averic is pretty good, right?”
Before she could respond, Harold asked, “Does anyone want to take the professor for a tour about our medical equipment? Dr. Chesson and Dr. Finnigan have a meeting later and can’t do it.”
Caleb muttered, “Can I use a translation app to talk to him?”
Unlike hospitals that frequently sent doctors abroad, Jembina Hospital mostly hired graduates from local medical schools. So, Averic proficiency varied a lot. Plus, knowing that guiding the professor around would take time away from their own work, no one volunteered.
Tiffany grabbed Melody’s hand and raised it. “Dr. Franklin, let Melody go! Her Averic is great.”
Melody immediately pulled her hand back and nervously looked at Harold.
Her Averic was indeed good.
Cheryl had gone through a phase of loving travel when she was younger, and despite Laura’s disapproval, she often took Melody abroad.
As a result, her spoken Averic was quite fluent.
Harold smacked his forehead. “How did I forget about you? Ms. Wardolf, can you show the professor around and take notes for the evaluation?”
He didn’t leave room for her to refuse.
“But I need to return to the ICU,” Melody protested.
“They don’t need you there right now. Angelica is back–she’ll cover for you.”
Tiffany leaned in and whispered, “Come on, Melody, this is a great opportunity! The ICU work is exhausting. Take a break for once.” She blinked playfully. “If my Averic were good enough, I’d go myself.”
With things already arranged, Melody had no choice but to accept the invite.
After the meeting, she walked over to the professor.
She was a little nervous as she introduced herself, but her pronunciation was excellent.
Krystal glanced at her. “How surprising. Your Averic is pretty good.”
“I studied it before,” Melody replied.
Not just studied—she had practiced it tirelessly.
When she first learned that the Chesson family planned to send Jeremy abroad, she had secretly worked on her Averic for years. She had always been trying to keep
up with him.
Krystal nodded.

Melody then hesitantly looked at Jeremy. “Am I taking the professor on the tour alone?”
Jeremy’s gaze was indifferent. “Obviously. Dr. Franklin made it clear that we’re busy.”
