Saving lives is my duty, and I don’t think I’m dirty.”
Chapter 48
Melody’s tone was soft yet firm
The faint scent of disinfectant lingered in the air. It was suffocating enough to make her feel short
She had always known about Jeremy’s severe germaphobia. That was why she had even gone to Felicia’s place to shower and change again before coming home, just to be extra careful.
But Jeremy still thought she was dirty
How could that not hurt her?
Melody pressed her lips together, her gaze locked onto him.
Jeremy met her stare with the same unfeeling indifference. His dark eyes looked even more detached under the soft glow of the orange–tinted light.
He frowned and asked, “What’s the connection between saving lives and you being dirty?”
Melody stiffened, her words caught in her throat.
She didn’t know how to respond.
Then his voice came again–this time, laced with unmistakable impatience. He said, “Do you need me to call someone to escort you out?”
Humiliation crashed over Melody like afidal wave, and she instinctively looked down at herself.
She was wearing the clothes she had just bought at the mall after dinner, but in Jeremy’s eyes, It was as if she was filth itself.
She had wanted to argue to defend herself. However, all her strength was suddenly drained away.
She grabbed her suitcase and left without another word.
It was late to go anywhere far, so Melody settled for a nearby hotel—it was a five–star hotel and was incredibly expensive.
Unfortunately, there weren’t any other options at this hour
Melody didn’t even bother unpacking as she stepped into the rooms
went straight to the bathroom, and when the hot water hit her skin, she scribbed at her arms hard.
Red marks bloomed across her pale skin almost instantly, but it still didn’t feel like enough.
She kept going–rubbing, scrubbing, and pressing harder repeatedly.
Herskin was buming now, raw from the friction.
Yet, she didn’t stop.
It was as if she couldn’t feel the pain and had shut down completely, reduced to nothing more than a machine performing the same action on repeat
She just wanted to scrub away whatever it was that Jeremy found so disgusting
But she wasn’t dirty at all.
Melody didn’t know how long she had been in the bathroom. Her strength had long since drained away.
She slowly sank down onto the bathroom floor, curling up against the cold ceramic tiles,
Her fingers, soaked and wrinded from the steaming water, still absently rubbed at her arīns,
By the time Melody had finished cleaning up and lay down in bed, she had already forced herself to calm down.
However, the comers of her eyes still held a faintedness.
She stared at the depressingly low balance in her bank account. She still needed over 500 thousand dollars to reach ber goal of 600 thousand.
Ase’s salary wasart high, and she made barely over 10 thousand dollars a month even in Jembina. And even then, she always set aside a portion of it to donate to the children at Green Moon Cuphanage.
This meant that the amount she could actually save was even less.
Melody arrived at the hospital the next day and went straight into the ICU
She saw jeremy at the mire station, but she forced herself to ignore hine.
Lunchtime finally gave her a small break.
just, as she was about to lead out, Tittany grabbed her by the arm and tugged her toward the break room. “Come on, come on, Dr. Franklin is treating us to lunch
Melody gently pulled her hand back, il pass. I brought my own bread.”
“Bread isn’t healthy at all”
Melody shook her head. She really didn’t want to go. She didn’t want to see Jeremy
Tiffany was about to persuade her again when a voice sounded behind them, “Huh? What are you two still doing here? Come in already.”
Melody glanced back and found Harold standing next to Jeremy.
