Chapter 46
By the time Melody finished tidying up, it was already late.
As she passed by the doctor’s office, she spotted caleb inside.
He glanced at her and said, “Dr. Chesson had already left with Dr. Finmgan.”
Emotionlessly, Melody replied, “Oh.”
It wasn’t unusual for Jeremy to leave without waiting for her after work in fact, he didn’t like her waiting for him unless there was something they absolutely had to do together.
If Andrew hadn’t publicly announced their engagement in the first place, most people in the hospital probably wouldn’t even believe the two of them knew each other.
Melody remained silent as she headed downstairs until she suddenly spotted Felicia standing outside the entrance.
Melody was startled for a moment before asking, “What are you doing here at the hospital?
Felicia dramatically sighed. With a helpless look, she said, “I’m waiting for you to eat, obviously, I tried calling, but your phone was turned off. So, I had no choice but to stake out the entrance.”
Melody suddenly remembered that she had set her phone to silent and left it in the locker when she entered the ICU earlier that aftemoon.
She hadn’t checked it since.
She softly apologized, “I was
was swamped all attemoon.”
“It’s fine. I wasn’t in a rush anyway.” Felicia grabbed her hand and started pulling her forward. “Come on, come on, we’ve got someone else waiting too.” Melody’s eyes lit up. “Jason is here too?”
Just as she spoke, she caught sight of a familiar figure standing outside.
The tall, young man had a buzz cut and bronze skin. Years of physical labor had given him a solid build and broad shoulders too. His whole person would provide a strong sense of security to anyone around him.
“Jason!” Telicia called out
Jason tumed toward them
He had defined features, and his gaze could seem a little intimidating when he wasn’t smiling. But the moment he saw them, that harshness melted away and was replaced by a quiet warmth
Jason pulled out two bags from behind him and handed one to Felicia and the other to Melody. got you guys something,
Felicia’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Are you serious? I’ve been with you this whole time, and you never took out any gifts. But the moment Mel shows up, you magically have presents?
“What’s the meaning of this? Are you looking down one?”
jason explained, “Give together. His voice was deep and rich, but his speech was slow.
Most kids who ended up in orphanages had their own struggles, and for Jason, it was gutter. It was something he had never been able to completely overcome no matter how hard he tried. So, be always kept his words short and to the point.
Melody looked at the bag in her hand, then at the two bickering beside her. Just like that, the frustration she had been carrying all afternoon seemed to fade away. She smiled. “I thought we were going to eat. Let’s go. ”
However, just as she spoke, two figures approached them, wallding side by side.
Jeremy had shed his white coat and was now casually dressed. It made him seem much more approachable than he did in the department earlier.
Krystal walled closely beside him. She was spealing in hushed tones while Jereiny occasionally responded with a slight nod
Melody’s gare naturally landed on them, and it was clear that Jeremy had also noticed her.
And then, he saw Jason and Felicia standing beside her.
His eyes flickered for a belet moment.
Melody instinctively met his gaze and asked, “Why are you back?”
Jenny’s dark eyes reflected her face for a fleeting second before he looked away just as quickly. Then, he walked right past her without answering, as if she were nothing but air.
Back in the department, Caleb was frowning. “Tessa just lost consciousness out of nowhere. They’re still trying to resuscitate her.”
