Chapter 36
Melody lifted her head and stared blanddy at Jeremy.
She then tumed to Andrew. However, it was only to see his heavy expression.
He spoke to her slowly, carefully enunciating his words as it making sure she could understand. He said, “Mel, your hearing loss is too severe. It’s best for you to leave your job at the hospital and take it easy at home.”
Melody’s eyes widened in shock She furiously shook her head, unable to believe what she was hearing.
She didn’t want to lose her job. She had been saving up for surgery and worked hard to get into Jembina Hospital on her own merits, despite Andrew opposing her worlding there from the start.
Melody kept shaking her head. Her lips parted as it she wanted to argue, but no sound came out. Yet, it was obvious she was saying no.
She desperately turned to Andrew, shaking her head again and again. Then, she fumbled for her phone and rapidly typed, “Simon said I’ll be fine in a couple of days, and I can continue working at the hospital.”
Andrew frowned. “Mel, you can’t be this stubbom. What if your condition ends up delaying a patient’s care?”
“I won’t. I promise I won’t.”
“This isn’t about promises. It’s about risk. And we don’t need to take that risk”
His voice was measured as if he was reasoning with a child. “The Regallo Group has already suffered serious damage because of what happened with you and Tessa. If something else happens at the hospital, it will only make things worse.
“Mel, you need to consider the Wardolf family too. You can’t just think about yourself.”
Melody didn’t understand why Andrew refused to believe that she could do this job. It was as if she had always been incompetent in his eyes.
But she had worked at the hospital for an entire year without making a single mistake. She had even received compliments!
Her only hope now was Jeremy.
She turned to him, hoping that he would speakup for her and that he would tell Andrew she was capable.
She grabbed his sleeve without caring whether he liked it or not and looked up at him with pleading eyes
She quickly typed and showed him her screen.
“I’ve done well in the department, haven’t I?”
Jeremy glanced at the message before pulling his gaze away. Then, with a detached expression, he lifted the arm she was holding and shookheroft,
There was a long, heavy silence before he said, “I’ll give the report to Dr. Tumer. Medical professionals must stay healthy, without it, they can’t perform their duties and may become a burden.”
Melody’s eyes tumed ted in an instant
Hadn’t she done her job well? Hadn’t Simon said her hearing would retum in a couple of days?
How would she ever save up the 600 thousand dollars she needed for surgery if she lost this job?
Melody furiously shook her head, her vision blurring as she typed.
A moment later, she held her phone up to Jeremy again.
The message on the screen read, “I can’t lose this job. I promise I’ll do my best. I won’t cause Jeremy’s brows furrowed slightly.
crouble. Please, please don’t tell Dr. Turne
He met Melody’s red–rimmed eyes, and for a second, something in his chest twisted uncomfortably.
But his voice remained impassive as he replied, “Thave a responsibility to the patients.”
The phone slipped from Melody’s trembling hunds, and her arms dropped to her sides.
Immediately, her tears fell uncontrollably.
