Chapter 20
Nathan was dragged out of the wedding venue by security. The heavy doors slammed shut behind him with a deafening thud, cutting off the sounds of the celebration inside.
Standing outside, he could still hear the faint echoes of the ceremony–the officiant announcing the exchange of rings, the guests‘ laughter, and the soft kiss that shattered his heart.
His chest tightened, leaving him gasping for air. He threw himself against the door and pounded it desperately as he shouted, “Open the door! Please, open the door! Anna, don’t marry him! Please don’t marry him!”
But the people inside seemed oblivious to his cries, or maybe no one cared enough to answer. The wedding continued. The sounds of joy, laughter, and cheers sliced through him like daggers.
With his forehead pressed against the cold door, tears streamed down his face uncontrollably. He’d never imagined he would find himself begging for forgiveness.
Before coming here, he’d considered every way to fix things. He’d even thought about getting on his knees and doing anything to win her back.
But now, seeing her marry someone else, he realized he didn’t even have the right to ask for her forgiveness.
“Please don’t do this, Anna. I’m really sorry. Don’t marry someone else… Please…”
His voice grew weaker, almost choked with sobs, but no one responded. He felt invisible, like a stranger who didn’t matter.
He regretted not realizing how he felt sooner and not appreciating her when he had the chance. But it was too late now. All those regrets were useless.
He didn’t know how much time passed before the door creaked open.
Daphne stepped out, her face as cold as ice. She marched up to Nathan and slapped him hard across the face. Her voice was filled with anger and disappointment.
“Nathan! What the hell happened between you and Anna? Tell me everything! I thought you liked Evelyn. Why the hell were you with Anna?”
The slap made him turn away. His cheek stung, but he seemed numb to the pain.
He looked up, his eyes filled with agony and regret. “Daphne, I’m really sorry. I shouldn’t have used Anna as a practice tool to get Evelyn. I don’t actually like Evelyn anymore. I’ve liked Anna for a long time. Please help me get her back. I can’t live without her.”
A practice tool?
Daphne’s whole body shook with rage. She pointed at his nose and scolded, “How dare you ask me for help? Anna’s my best friend! And you played with her feelings? How could you?”
Nathan didn’t seem to register her words. He continued pleading with her, “Daphne, please help me. She wouldn’t have moved on so quickly. I’m sure she’s just mad at me. Help me talk to her, please.”
Daphne was nearly beside herself with fury. She shouted, “Mad at you? Mad my ass! Nathan, you’re really overestimating yourself. Anna has liked Louie for a long time.
“Didn’t you notice you two look a bit alike? She never liked younger guys. She was probably only with you because you reminded her of Louie.”
Nathan’s face turned pale in an instant. His mind went blank, and a buzz echoed in his head, as if something inside him had shattered.
He shook his head violently, his voice breaking. “N–No way! That can’t be true!”
