Chapter 12
I was surprised. I parted my lips to speak, but Damien didn’t give me the chance to. He said, “I saw a nice necklace when I was at the mall one day, so I bought it for you.”
He didn’t bother asking whether or not I wanted it. He just took it from the box and carefully put it on for me. His actions were slow and careful, almost as if he were afraid I would turn him down.
I’d seen how decisive and ruthless he was at work, and I knew he rarely smiled. It felt a little weird seeing him so cautious now. I couldn’t help thinking that he’d done a lot for me while on the go.
He’d dropped by the hospital to visit me and had bought me food and flowers. Now, he’d bought me a necklace because he’d been at the mall.
I held the necklace and smiled at him. “It’s beautiful. I love it.”
When his expression remained serious, I pulled him onto a bench. He held my hand when we sat down and looked into my eyes. He asked in a small voice, “Aren’t you wondering whether I’m telling you the truth?”
My smile froze. I looked up at the darkening sky, and my gaze dimmed. I patted his hand gently after a while and said, “I know what I’m doing, Damo. Don’t worry.”
Damien said seriously, “I have a request.”
“What is it?”
“Could you not throw the necklace away in the future? Keep it, no matter what you remember.” He sounded slightly pleading.
“Why would I throw it when it’s so pretty?” I held the necklace tightly and looked at him. I laughed and said, “I’ll wear it when I eat, sleep, and bathe. I’ll keep it with me wherever I go!” His expression softened when he heard my words.
I said, “Come on. Let’s take some photos.”
I linked arms with him and took several photos. Then, I picked the nicest ones and shared them on my social media.
That night, Jordan came knocking on my door. It wasn’t because of the photos, though. It was because of Jessica.
“How could you be so evil, Seraphine? To think you went all the way to Jessica’s college to humiliate her! All you did was take a dip in the ocean, didn’t you? Did the water go to your brain or something?
“It’s bad enough that you forgot about me–how could you bully someone as naive as Jessica? She’s always been strong, but she’s cried the whole night because of you!” He glared at me, angrier than he’d ever been.
“I bullied her?” I frowned.
“Yeah, and you made her cry!” he snapped, looking disgusted.
I lowered my head and scoffed. Then, I exhaled and said, “You keep claiming that you’re my boyfriend and the man I love, Mr. Fray. But everything you’ve done so far tells me otherwise.” Jordan didn’t expect to hear that. He was taken aback. Then, he found a reason to explain away his behavior. “You’re the one who hooked up with Damien first!”
“Uh–huh. That’s why I’m going to spend the rest of my life with him. I’ll marry him, and we’ll be together forever. You can have your happy–ever–after with Jessica. Please stop bothering me,” I said.
He panicked when he heard that. “I won’t allow you to do that! I love you, Seraphine. You can’t marry Damien!”
He held my hand tightly, his eyes bloodshot as he pleaded with me.
“Love? Do you even know what you’re talking about?” I sneered.
My eyes reddened, and I pointed at my chest. Then, I cried, “I feel nothing for you here–the mere sight of you makes my stomach turn!”
“You’ve just lost your memories. You’ll remember everything in the future!” Jordan couldn’t stand the cold and contemptuous look in my eyes. I’d lost my memories? I wanted to laugh at that.
I chased him out and slammed the door shut. Then, tears streamed down my face. I couldn’t stop them, no matter what I did.
