Chapter 24
Despite the chaos caused by Justin, the engagement party finally came to an end. Zora, too, managed to compose herself.
“Let’s go home. Today, I’ll take you to Lynch Residence to meet the elders,” Frederic said excitedly.
He had wanted to bring Zora to Lynch Residence for a while. However, he had no official reason to do so back then. After all, she was merely an adopted daughter of the Serpentine family. Now, he finally had the opportunity.
A glint of greed flashed in Frederic’s eyes.
“Alright, since we’re engaged now, when will we get married, Frederic? You know I don’t have much influence in the Serpentine family,” Zora asked worriedly, holding onto Frederic’s arm.
“What’s the rush? We’re already engaged. It’s just a matter of time before we get married. Once Grandpa meets you and is satisfied, it’ll be a done deal. Don’t worry, Zora.”
Frederic smirked.
The reason he had chosen Zora in the first place was precisely because she was an orphan with no real standing in the Serpentine family. They had only taken her in, and there was no way she would receive a significant share of their assets.
In fact, the Serpentine brothers probably wished she was dead so they wouldn’t have to share the inheritance. The fact that Zora had no real power made her easy to control.
Soon, they got into the car and headed to Lynch Residence.
Only a few direct members of the Lynch family were there. The spacious mansion had a gloomy atmosphere, but Zora, seemingly unaware, smiled with anticipation.
“I didn’t prepare any gifts. Do you think Mr. Lynch Senior will mind?” she asked.
“Of course not. He’s been looking forward to meeting you.”
“That’s great. I’m finally going to have a real family. Frederic, I’m so glad I met you.”
Zora smiled, her eyes sparkling. On the other hand, Frederic sneered internally, thinking what a foolish woman Zora was.
Compared to the Serpentine family, the Lynch family was even more formidable. Did Zora, who was just an adopted daughter, really think he was going to marry her? If she weren’t so gullible, he wouldn’t have been able to deceive her so easily.
Frederic responded perfunctorily and led her into the grand hall.
At the front of the room sat Larry Lynch, the head of the Lynch family. His eyes lit up when he saw Zora.
“So, this is your fiancée?” Larry asked with a hint of approval in his voice.
“That’s right. A real gem, isn’t she?” Frederic grinned.
“A gem? What do you mean?” Zora was the only one who didn’t understand their conversation. She tilted her head in confusion.
At this point, Frederic no longer bothered to put on a show. He signaled to several housekeepers, who immediately stepped forward and restrained Zora.
“Frederic? Why are you tying me up? Aren’t we about to get married? What are you doing? Let me go!”
Even though Zora panicked and struggled desperately, she was no match for the several people holding her down. Within moments, she was bound tightly, and even her mouth was gagged, “Blame it on your bad luck. We just happened to need a new ‘container‘ for transporting drugs,” Frederic said, finally revealing his true nature.
Zora’s eyes widened in shock as she realized what he meant. She thrashed even harder, muffled cries escaping her as tears welled up.
“To be honest, you performed quite well at the engagement party today. If we weren’t in urgent need, I wouldn’t have chosen you. So really, it’s just bad luck, Zora. Take her away!” Frederic waved dismissively with a smile, ignoring her desperate gaze.
They dragged Zora into a warehouse filled with so many drugs that the sight alone made her heart race. If all these substances were to hit the streets….
She didn’t even want to think about it.
Biting down, she shattered the tracker hidden under her tongue. This was the signal agreed upon before the mission–the cue to move in.
Frederic thought he was using her, but in reality, she was using him to catch an even bigger fish.
Once this mission was over, her organization would implement the fake–death plan. The “Zora” identity would cease to exist, and she would take on a new identity for her next mission By then… Hopefully, she wouldn’t run into Justin again.
