Chapter 8
After saying those final words, Enola stepped past Robert, letting everything in the box tumble into the trash as she walked away. She then turned back toward her room without hesitation.
Exhaustion weighed heavily on her after an entire night without sleep. As soon as she reached her bed, she collapsed onto the soft mattress and quickly drifted off.
What she didn’t expect was that when she woke up, the very things she had thrown away had been neatly packed back into the box and placed outside her door.
Did Robert pick them back up from the trash? She stood there in a daze when Chloe happened to pass by.
Curious, Chloe rummaged through the box with wide eyes. “Oh? What’s this? This teddy bear is adorable! Can I have it?”
She continued picking through the items. “This one, too!”
Enola didn’t hesitate. She simply handed the entire box over to Chloe.
The moment she did, she looked up to find Robert standing nearby, and his face was dark with fury. His gaze burned with restrained anger, but she ignored him and turned back inside, simply sleeping through the rest of the day.
After that, Robert and Chloe became even more openly affectionate as if they were flaunting their relationship. Enola barely left her room just to avoid them.
That was until it was Chloe’s birthday. Her party was held at the most luxurious hotel in Bakersville. The grand hall was filled with guests, but all eyes remained fixed on Chloe and
Robert.
When it was time for gift–giving, Robert presented his gift first. He took out a custom–made ten–carat pink diamond ring under the glow of the chandelier and slipped it onto Chloe’s finger.
“Chlo, I had this ring made especially for you. It’s called Chloélis – a name that combines your name and the word ‘elysian,‘ symbolizing our eternal love.”
Chloe’s cheeks flushed as soon as Robert said these words, and a wave of admiration spread through the crowd.
“I heard this diamond is worth over 100 million dollars. Mr. Shaw really doesn’t hold back when it comes to making his beloved smile!”
“They always said Mr. Shaw was cold and unapproachable, but ever since he started dating Ms. Garcia, he’s completely changed. I guess even the most distant man becomes warm in front of the woman he loves.”
“Ms. Garcia is incredibly lucky to have a fiancé as devoted and handsome as Mr. Shaw!”
The chorus of praises fed Chloe’s vanity, and she turned her gaze to Enola with a triumphant smile. Feigning curiosity, she pressed, “It’s my birthday today, Ennie. I wonder what kind of gift you prepared for me.”
Enola remained calm as she handed her a small gift box. Inside was an opal pendant.
She had once begged Robert for it when she was a child. She still remembered how he had sighed helplessly and said, “This is meant for my future wife. I can’t give it to you. Why don’t you pick something else?”
Even so, she had refused to let go, knowing he would indulge her. In the end, he had given in with a resigned smile.
“Alright, alright. Don’t cry. It’s yours, you little troublemaker. But you have to take care of it forever.”
Now, the time had come to return it to its rightful owner. Robert clearly remembered that moment from years ago as well. When he saw Enola give it away so effortlessly, his expression flickered with shock before his face darkened.
“Enola, what’s the meaning of this?” His voice carried an unmistakable edge.
Enola smiled in response, and her tone was soft and composed as she said, “I’m simply wishing for you two to be together forever.”
With that, she turned and walked away without looking back.
