Chapter 6
As they talked, the front doors of the Shaw residence opened once again. Enola and the elderly couple instinctively turned to look, only to see Robert entering with Chloe.
Noticing how lively their conversation was, he asked without much thought, “What’s so exciting?”
“We were just talking about Ennie’s wedding! Come take a look. Her fiancé is really handsome…”
Jeremiah and Eliana were full of joy, but in stark contrast, Robert’s expression darkened instantly.
“Enola, what exactly are you trying to do? Is putting on an act in front of me not enough? Do you have to put on a show for my parents, too?”
His sudden fury left Jeremiah and Eliana completely confused. “Acting? Who’s acting?”
Sensing the tension, Chloe quickly tugged at Robert’s sleeve, trying to defuse the situation. “Mr. and Mrs. Shaw, Robert and I actually came today to visit you—”
But her attempt at warmth did nothing to please them.
The moment Eliana heard her voice, her expression turned cold, and Jeremiah outright scoffed in disdain. “I already told you not to bring her here again.”
Robert’s expression remained unreadable, but his voice was laced with quiet determination. “Dad, Mom, I’ve already made up my mind. No matter what you say, I will marry her.”
His defiance only fueled Jeremiah’s anger. He snapped without hesitation, “Then, do as you wish! But don’t expect us to acknowledge her. Don’t bother coming back to see us
you wish! But don’t exp from now on!”
When Robert looked down to see Chloe’s tear–filled eyes, he didn’t want to linger any longer. He took her hand and stormed out of the house without another word.
Watching his figure disappear behind the door, Eliana sighed and shook her head before turning to Enola with a deep sense of exasperation.
“Robert has always been the perfect son. Just look at how people talk about him–how he’s the golden boy and the most outstanding heir. He’s always made the right choices, so how could he be so blind when it comes to choosing a wife?”
Jeremiah scoffed again, and his discontent with Chloe was evident in every word. “That woman has deception written all over her face. We didn’t say anything when Robert first brought her home. We thought as long as he liked her, that was enough.
“But Chloe? She acts all sweet and obedient in front of others, but she turns vicious the moment she steps away from the public eye, She once slapped and berated a household staff just because they accidentally bumped into her.
“How did Robert become so fixated on her? Is it just because she’s pretty? But he’s never been so shallow before…”
Enola listened quietly, offering no response. Perhaps it was love. Perhaps when you loved someone enough, everything else didn’t matter.
A nearby household staff sighed and suddenly turned to Enola. “Maybe it really is because she’s beautiful. If you look closely… Ms. Garcia’s eyes look quite similar to yours, Ms. Enola.”
The words were spoken casually, but they struck Enola with an odd sensation. It was as if something flickered before her eyes–a fleeting thought and a half–formed realization— but it vanished before she could grasp it.
With no time to dwell on it, she simply got up and bid farewell to the couple. Seeing that she was leaving, Jeremiah and Eliana were reluctant to let her go.
“Leaving so soon, Ennie? When will you come visit us again?”
Enola was silent for a long time before forcing a smile. “I’ll be settling in Melcian permanently. I probably won’t be coming back,”
