Chapter 5
The first time Enola saw that rosary bracelet was at her parents‘ funeral. Robert had been entrusted with her care by her parents before they passed, and when he came to take her back to the Shaw family, the bracelet was already on his wrist.
She never knew where it came from–only that he always wore it and rarely took it off.
When she turned 18 years old and was overwhelmed by unspoken feelings for Robert, she did the boldest thing she had ever done in her life. She stole the rosary bracelet while he slept.
She hid the bracelet in the most intimate place a girl could in the dimly lit room. The cool touch of the beads sent shivers down her spine until pleasure overtook her. The familiar scent of sandalwood surrounded her, and it almost felt like his arms were around her in that hazy moment.
Then, a sharp, furious voice shattered the silence. “What do you think you’re doing?”
Blood drained from her face. She turned stiffly, only to see Robert standing there, gripping the diary she had filled with love–laced confessions. But when his eyes dropped to her trembling lower body, realization dawned, and his face turned completely pale.
That night ended with him mercilessly throwing the rosary bracelet into the trash and sending her out of the country before sunrise.
It was clearly thrown away. So, why was it here, carefully kept, as if it had never been lost?
She had no answer, and she decided not to dwell on it since she couldn’t understand it. Whatever the reason, they had their own lives now. She would simply pretend she had never stepped into this room tonight.
The next day, Enola went to visit Robert’s parents. The moment she stepped inside, she saw Jeremiah Shaw and Eliana Green already waiting for her at the door.
Their faces lit up with warm smiles as they greeted her, pulling her inside to sit with them.
“It’s been years, and you’ve grown so much, Ennie! Robert really did a good job taking care of you,” Jeremiah said, his tone full of relief.
Enola simply smiled at his words. Robert had indeed been good to her–once.
When she lost her parents, he took on the responsibility of raising her. When she was too afraid to express her preferences, he figured them out one by one and made sure she had everything she loved.
When people called her cursed, blaming her for her parents‘ deaths, he even avenged her. He held her close and whispered, “You’ll always be my little lucky star, Ennie.”
When she fell ill with a high fever, he stayed up all night by her side, taking care of her until morning. But all his tenderness and care ended the day she turned 18 years old.
Eliana held her hand fondly as they chatted, but before long, the conversation naturally drifted to marriage.
“Ennie, you’re 22 years old now, aren’t you? It’s time to start dating. Would you like us to introduce you to someone?”
Enola quickly waved her hands. Seeing their confusion, she hurriedly explained, “I already have a boyfriend, and we’re getting married soon. Aside from visiting my parents, I came back to share the news with you.”
“You’re already getting married?” Jeremiah and Eliana looked pleasantly surprised. “That’s wonderful! Do you have photos? Let us see!”
Enola nodded with a smile and scrolled through her phone, showing them pictures one by one.
After looking through them, the couple was full of praise. “This young man seems like a good person. He has a kind face.”
Enola’s eyes softened as she smiled when she heard them speak of Parker. “He really is good to me.”
