Jonathan snorted derisively and said, “You better hope that’s the case. If you don’t succeed in marrying into that rich family, I’ll sell you off to some old man!”
Jonathan had been muttering angrily as he turned to leave, only to be stunned in place at the sight of Caleb standing at the entrance of the alleyway.
Christine had also noticed Caleb. Her face immediately drained of color as she muttered, “Caleb?”
Caleb made no attempt to dodge or feign ignorance. His voice was hoarse as he asked, “Is all of this nothing but a lie, Christine?”
Christine trembled violently, leaving her completely speechless.
Having snapped out of his daze, Jonathan stammered, “I–It was all my good–for–nothing daughter’s doing, Mr. Lancaster! I swear I had absolutely no part in it! Please don’t take it out on me, Mr. Lancaster!”

Christine, who had always carried herself with such pride, felt completely humbled for the first time. In stark contrast, Caleb, seemingly in a w breathed, “I suppose this is what it feels like to be on the receiving end of betrayal.”
