Chapter 14
Caleb was stunned. He raised his gaze and spotted a middle–aged man tugging at Christine. His anger immediately surged as he exclaimed, “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
He charged forward, grabbed the middle–aged man, and punched him square in the face.
Christine became flastered and hurriedly grabbed Caleb, exclaiming, “Calm down, Caleb H–He’s my father.”
Caleb came to an abrupt halt, gazing at Christine in stunned disbelief. “Your father?”
Christine, feeling embarrassed and ashamed, lowered her head in response.
Having recognized Caleb, Christine’s father, Jonathan Sawyer, said hurriedly, “That’s right! I’m Christine’s father. You must be Mr. Lancaster, right? I’ve heard so much about you! I mean, we’re practically family now, so this is just a misunderstanding that’ll bring us closer together!”
It was then that Christine said coldly, “Get out of here!”
Jonathan, worried about messing up Christine’s plans, laughed sheepishly before talding his leave.
Caleb turned to Christine in surprise and asked, “Is that man really your father?”
Christine lowered her head in shame. Her voice sounded rough and strained as she replied, “Yes, he’s my father. He used to abuse my mother when I was a child, causing her to abandon the family when I was five years old. He later committed a crime and was imprisoned for it. He’s only recently been released, and he’s been harassing me ever since.”
Though she had never shared these things with Caleb before, Christine knew it was only a matter of time before the truth came out. Having shared these with him, she looked up at Caleb and asked, “Do you think less of me now?
Caleb snapped backto attention and replied, “There’s no way I would do that. Your parents‘ actions don’t reflect who you are.”
Christine chuckled softly, saying, “You truly surpass my expectations.”
Caleb was momentarily speechless, and before he could gather his thoughts, Christine continued, “I always thought I wasn’t good enough for you. It was the reason why I always kept my distance from you. I’ve now laid everything bare before you, and since you don’t seem to mind, then…”
She trailed off before gathering her resolve and continued, “What do you think about getting back together, Caleb?”
Caleb stood frozen in place.
Christine’s smile gradually disappeared as she asked, “What’s the matter? Is it because you look down on my background?”
Caleb immediately replied, “It’s not that. I don’t care about your background; it’s just that…”
Caleb suddenly froze mid–sentence. He didn’t know what was wrong with himself. He had been looking forward to Christine asking
this time, after all. However, now that she had asked, the happiness he had expected never came.
“It’s just that… I’m just a little overwhelmed right now. Could you please give me some time to think about it?”
Christine’s complexion turned pale before she forced a smile and replied, “Alright.”
