Chapter 47
“It’s not right to leave her body at the police station, so I arranged for her to be cremated. Don’t worry, I found a beautiful resting place for her. She wi be at peace.”
1 pursed my lips, biting down hard as tears streamed down my face, leaving me feeling hollow. “Why? Why didn’t you let me see her one last time?”
Sophia looked at me with a complex expression but remained silent. I gasped for breath, my hands gripping the blanket tightly.
“I have no family left now.”
“That’s not true; you still have me.” She reached out and firmly grasped my hand, her voice softer than I had ever heard.
I looked up at her, forcing a smile. “Sophia, I regret everything. If I hadn’t been so obsessed with finding you, marrying you, and protecting you, maybe my mom wouldn’t have died ”
If I had forgotten that it was Sophia who saved me, I wouldn’t have felt the need to protect her so fiercely. My body wouldn’t have suffered like this, and Mom wouldn’t have clung to the delusion that having a wealthy daughter–in–law would shield her from harm, leading her to gamble recklessly.
People become reckless when they think they have nothing to fear.
Sophia tightened her grip on my hand. “I’m sorry. If I had given you the money sooner, this wouldn’t have happened.”
It was too late now; nothing could change what had already happened. I had brought this upon myself. If I hadn’t been so stubborn and unwilling to let go, my relationship with Sophia wouldn’t have deteriorated to this point.
didn’t respond to her, instead, I closed my eyes and lay there in silence.
Sophia sat beside Joshua’s hospital bed, holding his hand tightly and softly reassuring him, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here with you.”
She knew she didn’t truly love him and understood what she was doing.
Once Sophia realized that Edson wasn’t the person she thought he was, her obsession faded She began to analyze things more objectively and recognized that the likelihood of Joshua killing Edson was slim,
Though she could never fully trust Joshua, she acknowledged that her past actions toward him had been excessively harsh.
As she looked at the pale man lying quietly on the bed, her expression grew increasingly complicated. For some reason, she felt that he had lost a lot of weight
Furrowing her brow, she recalled how Joshua had appeared when they first met. Back then, he stood tall and strong, looking at her with concern as tears streamed down her face.
“Sophia, don’t cry. You deserve all the beautiful things in this world,” Joshua had said.
It was hard to believe that the once vibrant young man had become a shell of himself, like a pine tree stripped of its needles, exuding an air of despair. How did it come to this? When did the cheerful man turn into someone so broken?
Sophia opened her mouth to say something to lighten the mood but hesitated, unsure of what to say.
After a long moment, I opened my eyes and emotionlessly pulled my hand away. “Sophia, remember that day we left the Holmes Group? We saw those people looking for my mom about the debt. Do you know them?
