Chapter 19
Jayden said, “Joshua, the cancer suppression medication has been administered. You still have a long time to live. Wake up quickly. Your mother has been coming to the hospital every few days after learning about your condition. She’s lost weight. If you don’t wake up, what will happen to her?
“And Juliette.. I can see she still cares about you. She keeps coming to the ICU to check on you.”
He said many things, his voice choking by the end.
I knew he was worried about me and wanted to wake up, but I just couldn’t open my eyes.
Not long after he left, Sophia came in.
Her voice was still as cold and calm as before. “Joshua, I looked into Edson’s past. He really wasn’t the man I thought he was. In fact, he had no connection to you. But that doesn’t prove you aren’t the one who killed him.
“Why were you with him on the rooftop that day if it wasn’t you? Joshua, this time, I’m willing to listen to your explanation. Tell me everything you’ve been through when you wake up, okay?”
Tell her the truth? If I told her, would she believe me?
If she truly wanted to believe, she could have investigated Edson sooner, and we might not have reached this point.
This time, I tried really hard to open my eyes, but it was useless.
Ultimately, she left the ICU, and again, the room fell silent.
Three days later, I woke up in the morning
1 squinted, struggling to see everything around me, feeling like this world was both strange and familiar.
I didn’t expect Sophia to be the first person I saw after waking up around 8:00 am
The smell of disinfectant in the ICU made her furrow her brows. She pressed her lips together and silently sat by my bed.
“Joshua, it’s been so many days. Why haven’t you woken up yet?”
She glanced at my IV drip, her eyes reddening slightly.
She seemed scared I wouldn’t wake i
up again
I kept my lips sealed, pretending to be unconscious as she continued talking
She said, “The doctor says that as long as you cooperate with the treatment, there’s still a chance for recovery. I’ve already paid for your treatment. If they don’t save you, I will sue them!”
As she spoke, a nurse in protective gear came in to change my dressing. Sophia turned to look at her.
“Is there a chance be will wake up today?”
“When the patient is ready to wake up, he will.”
As the nurse changed my dressing, my fingers trembled slightly. I hesitated, wondering if I should open my eyes and speak. Just then, Sophia reacted. dramatically, standing up in shock and pointing at my hand.
“Miss, his his hand just moved”
After a brief lasitation, the nurse looked at my hand and said seriously, “I’ll go call the doctor right away.”
As soon as the nurse left, Sophia focused intently on my face
“Jost, since you’re awake, why are you still pretending to sleep?”
