Chapter 54
While Cynthia was in the hospital, the doctor said she could not handle any more stress. So, Selena did not dare to show up, worried it might upset her again.
When Cynthia fell asleep at night, she would sneak into the hospital. How could 20 years of feelings just be cut off?
However, she did not dare to show any of her feelings in front of Shirley.
Shirley had been abused by Rachel and her husband over the years. Selena felt so guilty and distressed.
Even though Shirley was narrow–minded and lacked the upbringing of a relined lady, it was not her fault. It was because she had not protected her well and had been secretly swapped.
Shirley should have grown up safely and happily, becoming a talented and beautiful lady like Cynthia. But instead, she suffered so much from a young age.
Just thinking about it made Selena’s heart ache. She never expected Shirley and Cynthia to get along as sisters because she knew it was impossible.
That was how Selena and Rachel were back then. It felt like a curse, with her tragedy repeating itself in the next generation. She just hoped that they could stay out of each other’s lives, even if it meant never interacting again.
Therefore, Selena had been trying her best to satisfy Shirley’s demands. She only hoped that Shirley could let go of Cynthia after satisfying her desire for revenge.
Just like back then, after Selena had taken her revenge on Rache, she suddenly felt relieved. She knew that only by releasing all her inver malice could she finally move DIL
She had indulged Shirley for three years, and this would be the last time.
Tll satisfy her one last time, Selena said to herself inwardly.
She walked to the center of the stage and stood in front of the microphone. Before she could speak, her gaze found Cynthia’s position.
At that moment, Cynthia stood at the bottom of the stage. She looked at Selena with a blank expression–no anger, no resentment–just indifference as if she had become numb.
Selena squeezed her fingers and looked away. Then, she announced, “Yes, Lilian has a special connection with our family, and we plan to take her as our goddaughter.”
Selena said nothing more. The audience below started to congratulate her.
Shirley hurriedly pulled Lilian over, urging her to greet Justin and Selena.
Lilian was also very excited. She said cautiously in a sweet voice, Godfather, Godmother
Selena reluctantly answered, but Justin remained silent, his face dark with displeasure.
Then came the toast ceremony, which Shirley had already arranged in advance.

When Lilian sweetly called out to Justin and Selena, Cynthin felt as if a knife had pierced her heart, creating a deep wound that bled heavily.
Her eyes were wet, but her stubbornness held back the tears. She would not cry for them anymore.
Cynthia walked to the gate and was about to leave. However, she was stopped by the security guards at the door.
“Ms. Cynthia Jones, Ms. Shirley Jones said that you can’t leave today since it’s her birthday today”

Four security guards surrounded the door like an impregnable wall. One of them said, “Ms. Shirley Jones said you for the entire birthday party before you can leave. She has a gift for you.”
Cynthia wanted to fight back, but she could not take on four, especially since she was wearing a dress. Moreover, if she made a scene, it was exactly what Shirley wanted to see.
Cynthia finally turned around, but she did not want to see the cheerful scene over there, so she decided to head to the lounge. When she was halfway up the stairs, someone ran after her.
“Cynthia, there you are, someone called.
Cynthia turned around. The person who was walking up the stairs was Lilian, whom she did not want to see the most.
Lilian had just been recognized as the goddaughter of the Jones family. How could she,not rush to share such good news with Cynthia?
In no time, Lilian stood in front of Cynthia, just a step away. She looked innocent and cautious. “Cynthia, I’ve been recognized as the goddaughter of the Jones family, You’re not upset, are you?” she asked.
Cynthia looked at Lilian’s innocent yet shameless face and almost laughed.
She looked down at Lilian and said, “Lilian, stop being so innocent. I feel disgusted.”
A complex emotion flashed across Lilian’s eyes, a mix of sadnes and pleasure, but all her emotions were fleeting. When she looked at Cynthia, she still seemed as innocent as a naive little rabbit.
“Cynthia, I come from a troubled background. You know what my mother is like. I’ve suffered abuse and torment and have never lived a good day. The luckiest thing in my life was meeting you in high school,” Lilian said.
Her expression was so sincere, her eyes glistening with tears as if she truly felt deep gratitude.
She continued, “Back then, I was accepted into Treston International High School Everyone in the school looked down on me and bullied me. It was you who reached out and pulled me out of the mud. You stood in front of me like a shield when I was attacked. Cynthia, you are my lifelong savior.”
Cynthia frowned. She did not understand why Lilian was suddenly saying all this.
Back then, it was true. Lilian always stayed alone in the corner and walked with her head down. She was always bullied by
others.
The school was like a cruel old–growth forest. Cynthia stood at the top of the pyramid,while Lilian was at the bottom. Cynthia first noticed Lilian one day when Lilian did not come to school. As the class monitor, Cynthia went with the teacher to visit her home.
In a place like a slum, they found Lilian’s home. The house was in ruins, with nothing decent inside.
“Lilian’s parents were quarreling. Her mother, Sarah Sheppard, shouted curses at her father, hurling all sorts of insults that

Her father, Varden Sheppard, was sitting in a wheelchair, lifeless as a living dead man.

Everything in the room had been smashed. Lilian squatted on the ground and numbly picked up the pieces as if this was her everyday routine.
Later, Cynthia learned that Lilian did not go to school that day because Yarden crossed the road in a wheelchair and stopped in the middle of the road, trying to end his own life.
“Yarden Sheppard, if you die once, I’ll save you once. If you die a hundred times, I’ll save you a hundred times. I want you to live and be as miserable as mel Sarah shouted.
When Cynthia heard those words, she felt a shiver run through her body. She still vaguely remembered the scene from that
year.
After Sarah had cursed enough, she began to vent all her emotions on Lilian, grabbing her hair and pinching her. She even grabbed a kitchen spatula and struck Lilian on the back.
Seeing this, the class teacher hurried in to stop her. But Sarah, acting crazy, refused to back down.
While Sarah was struggling with the class teacher, Cynthia stepped in, grabbed Lilian’s arm, and took her out of the door.
