Chapter 11

Violet’s POV

“You should stay over for dinner and spend the night here tonight. I know you must be exhausted and hungry after all the studying. Plus, I am sure Sofia is hungry,” Traci said.

“I think that is a good idea, mom, Emily said. Everyone was looking at me, waiting for me to answer. I could feel Ryan’s gaze on me and had a feeling he wanted to stay.

“Sure,” I replied

“Great, Ryan will be down soon,” Traci said.

“Ryan,” I looked over at Ryan and couldn’t help the blush that came on my face when I saw him already staring at me.

“Our father is named Ryan as well,” Emily said. I was shocked because I thought his name was Lee. That is what everyone had been calling him.

“Everyone calls him Lee. It is his middle name,” Ryan said.

“Come on. Everyone should be coming down for dinner soon,” Traci said, and we headed to a room that looked like a cafeteria. There were round tables with six chairs, each at a table. People were already standing in line getting food which was in a buffet setting.

“Come on, V. Let’s get some food. I am hungry,” Emily said

“You can leave Sofia with me while you get your plates,” Traci said. Emily, Ryan, and I headed to the buffet. I could feel his gaze on my back as we walked.

“Let me help you. I will hold Sofia’s plate,” Ryan said.

“That not necessary,” I said, but he reached for the plate

anyway.

“I insist,” he replied, looking into my eyes. I was trying to avoid him, but he wasn’t making it easy for me. For some reason, I felt happy he wanted to help me. I also like the fact he spent time with Sofia. I still didn’t trust him and was still mad at him.

I decided not to argue with him about helping me make Sofia’s plate. I told him what she would like, and he placed it on the plate. Once we were done, Ryan, Emily, and I headed back to the table. Lee was sitting there with Traci and Sofia.

“Hey, it’s nice to see the both of you decided to stay the night. Did you get a lot done on your project,” Lee asked.

“Yeah, dad,” Emily lied. We barely got anything done because Jane and Emily were arguing the entire time we were there. I sat next to Emily and Sofia. Traci was on the other side of Sofia, and Lee sat next to her. Ryan placed Sofia’s food next to her and went to grab his own. Sofia quickly took a chicken nugget off her plate and took a bite.

“I am going to get my food. I will be right back,” Ryan said. Lee and his mother went with him to get their food as well.

Dinner was nice. Everyone once in a while, someone would come over and say hi to Traci or Lee. I noticed people looking at me as if wondering who I was, but no one asked. Ryan’s gaze

stayed on me the entire time, and that made me nervous. I wondered what had changed his mind about me. First, he was rude to me, and now he was being so kind to Sofia and me.

“Your mother and I are going to go to our floor. We will see you, kids, tomorrow,” Lee said

“Okay, mom and dad. See you in the morning,” Emily said

“Good night, mom and dad,” Ryan said.

“Are you ready to go to my room? Sofia looks like she is about to pass out,” Emily said. I looked at Sofia and saw she was having difficulty keeping her eyes open.

“Yeah, she is so tired. I need to get her in bed,” I replied and stood up from my seat to take Sofia out of the booster seat.

“I will walk with you two,” Ryan said

“Okay,” Emily said, and we headed to Emily’s room.

“You can lay her on the bed. It’s big enough for us all to sleep in,’ Emily said, and I placed Sofia on the king–size bed.

“Violet, I was hoping I could talk to you in private for a moment,” Ryan said

“Okay. I will be right back, Emily,” I replied and walked with him out of Emily’s room. I was nervous because I didn’t know what he wanted to talk to me about. The last time I was at his house, he said some mean things to me that I didn’t understand.

“I wanted to apologize again for how I spoke to you the last time you were here. I was hoping you have thought about us becoming friends and starting over,” Ryan said

“I am going, to be honest with you, Ryan. I didn’t like the way your spoke to me that day. It seemed as if you had a problem with Sofia being with me, and I am not okay with that. I am the only person Sofia has; she will always come first. So I can forgive you for speaking to me evilly, but I am not ready to be your friend because I can’t be friends with someone that has a problem with my little sister,” I said. I could see a frown come on his face for a moment. I knew he was sad and wondered if I should become his friend.

“There you are, Ry. Hi Violet, I am shocked to see you here.” I looked to see Jane walking toward us.

“Hello, Jane,” I replied

“What are you doing here?” Ryan asked irritatedly

“I wanted to talk to you about something,” Jane said

“We have nothing to talk about, Jane. I already told you we were over,” Ryan said.

“I will leave you to talk,” I said, not wanting to get in their business.

“You don’t have to go,” Ryan said

“I am tired, and you two need to talk. Good night,” I said. Ryan seemed not to want me to leave, but he didn’t stop me. I walked into Emily’s room with pain in my chest.
