Chapter 2
Violet’s POV
“What can I get for the two of you this morning?” The waitress asked. It was two mornings after the night I left with my little sister Sophia. I had decided to stop and rest at a hotel in a small town far away from my father. It was morning, and I took Sofia to get some breakfast at a Pancake restaurant before returning to the road.
“We will both have pancakes, bacon, and eggs with orange juice to drink, please,” I said with a smile.
“Your food will be here shortly. I will be back with your orange juice,” The server said
“Thank you,” I said, and she walked away.
“So where should we go, Soph?” I asked. Sophia was sitting in a booster chair and coloring. “How about LA? I have always wanted to go there.”
“If I were you, I would stay in a small town. You know big ones are overrated with the high crime rate and all.” I looked to see a girl around my age standing in front of me. She looked to be a little taller than me, with long brunette hair and blue eyes.
“Um, Hello,” I said
“I am sorry. I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop or anything; I just overheard you talking to your daughter. My name is Emily,” She said, holding out her hand for me to shake.

“Hello, my name is Violet,” I said and placed my hand in hers, shaking it.
“Do you mind if I join you?” Emily asked
“Of course not,” I replied. I don’t know why for some reason, I felt comfortable around her. Like trusted her for some reason
unknown to me.
“Hello, Sweetheart. What’s your name?” Emily asked, looking at Sophia
“This is Sofia. Say hi, Sofia,” I said
“Hi,” Sophia said and waved her little hand, causing Emily and me to laugh.
“She is so cute,” Emily said
“Thank you,” I replied
Emily ordered some food, and we made small talk. She seemed like a cool person and someone I would become friends with if I was staying there.
“Can I be honest with you?” Emily asked
“Sure,” I replied
“I feel like you are running from something or someone. You don’t have to tell me, but I wanted to let you know that I can help you,” She said. I just looked at her, shocked. How could she know that I was running from someone? “You don’t have to tell me anything about it, but I want to help you if you let me,” Emily said.

“How could you help me? Why would you help me? You don’t know anything about me,” I said.
“Because, for some reason, I feel you and I are going to become good friends,” She said. For some reason, I felt the same about her. I trusted her and knew she wanted to help me. She took a piece of paper and pen out of her purse and wrote down her name and number. “This is my number. If you decide you want my help, call me,” Emily said. She was about to get up, but I placed my hand in hers.
“Sophia is not my daughter. She is my sister,” I said and began telling her everything. I told her about my mother passing away while giving birth to Sofia and how my father began to abuse me. How I am the only parent Sofia has ever known.
“I can’t believe your father would sell you to his boss. That is disgusting,” Emily said
“I know, right? He hasn’t been a father to me since my mom passed,” I said
“So you will stay here?” Emily asked
“Yeah, but now I have to figure out where we will live. I only have eight thousand dollars saved. That isn’t going to last long. I need to get a job and find an apartment,” I said
“You can stay with me. I have a house with three bedrooms, and I live by myself. You and Sophia can stay with me free of charge,” she said, and I couldn’t help but stare at her, speechless. “What,” she asked with a small laugh.
“Why are you helping me? You don’t know me,” I asked again. It wasn’t normal for someone to help a complete stranger the way

she was helping me. I was starting to believe she was an Angel brought down to earth.
“I already told you, Violet. I feel we are going to be great friends,” She said. I looked over at Sophia, who was eating her pancakes quietly. “So what do you say,” Emily asked
“Yes, I will stay with you, but I am not going to stay rent free. I will help you with the bills,” I said
“My parents own the house. I don’t pay any bills. They pay for everything,” She said
“And they won’t care that I am staying with you without paying anything? Your parents will think I am taking advantage of you,” I said
“No, they won’t. I will call them when we get back and let them know one of my friends from school is staying with me. That way, they won’t ask too many questions about who you are,” She said
“Fine. But I will be putting food in the house,” I said
“No need. My parents make sure the house is stocked with food. Even though I can’t cook,” She said
“Well, you are in luck because I happen to be a great cook,” I said
“Great. I am tired of eating fast food all the time. Come on. Let’s go to your new home,” she said, and we walked out of the restaurant.
“This is it,” she said, and I couldn’t help the gasp that came out

of my mouth.
“This is a mansion. You didn’t tell me you lived in a mansion,” I said
“It’s alright, I guess. My parents’ house is bigger than this. You should see my brother Ryan’s house,” she said as we walked into the house. Men in suits stood outside, guarding the house.
“Who are you?” I asked
“My parents are always worried about my safety. You will get used to them. Come on, let me show you and Sofia to your rooms,” Emily said.
We walked up the stairs, and she took me to a huge room with a bathroom, walk-in closet, and balcony.
“This is beautiful,” I said, looking around the room. “Sof and I can share this room,” I said
“Are you sure? She can stay in the other one,” Emily asked.
“Yeah, she is used to sleeping with me anyway,” I said
“Okay, but she can stay in that room if you change your mind. You can put her stuff in that room if you want,” she said
“That won’t be necessary. We don’t have much anyway. I had to leave quickly so my father wouldn’t catch me,” I replied
Suddenly, Emily’s phone rang. She took her cell out of her pocket and looked at the screen. “It is my mom. I need to take this,” She said and answered.
“Hello,” Emily said and listened to what her mom had to say.
Chapter 2
“Of course, I will be there tonight. You know what? I am going to bring my new roommate with me. She just started going to school with me,” Emily said, causing me to look at her.
“Okay, bye, mom,” she said and hung up.
“What do you mean you are bringing me with you?” I asked
“It is my parent’s anniversary party tonight, and you and Sof are coming with me.”
“What, no,” I replied.
“What do you mean no,” I already told them you would come, and now they are expecting to meet you. You, have to come,” she said
“Fine.”
I had no idea going to Emily’s Parent anniversary party would change my life forever.
