Chapter 10
Just as the words faded, Chloe James’s distinctive ringtone sounded again.
Ethan Chase hung up without a second thought.
But in the next moment, his phone screen lit up with a flurry of text messages from Chloe James:
[Ethan, the internet is calling me The Other Woman. You can’t just abandon me, can you?]
[Ethan, your mom is terrifying. She’s sending me dead rats and razor blades. I’m on the verge of depression.]
[Ethan, you can’t ignore me. Dad entrusted me to you before he left. You swore you’d take care of me!]
[Ethan, please… won’t you just talk to me?]
[Ethan Chase! Samantha Hayes even aborted your child. She doesn’t love you at all. Why are you still clinging to that old hag?!]
With a loud clatter, Ethan’s phone hit the floor. He stumbled backward, staring at me in disbelief:
“A child? Sammy, did… did we have a child?”
Ethan glossed over the content of Chloe James’s messages, grasping my shoulders with a mix of laughter and tears: “Sammy, when… when did we have a child?”
I shrugged off Ethan’s touch, looking at the face countless fans had fantasized about, and spoke coldly:
“We don’t anymore.”
Ethan paused for a second, clearing his throat:
“Don’t anymore? What does that mean? Sammy, what do you mean by ‘don’t anymore‘?”
Ethan, who hadn’t shed a tear even when he fractured his ribs as a stunt double, now had tears streaming down his face uncontrollably.
His eyes red from crying, he choked out:
“Sammy, what Chloe James said isn’t true, right?
“Tell me, Sammy. I’ll believe anything you say.”
Ethan cried, trying to touch my belly.
I stepped back to maintain distance, calmly looking at the man before me who could no longer stir any emotion in my heart, and said coldly and distantly:
“A child isn’t an obstacle to our divorce.
“Ethan Chase, we’ve been over for a long time.”
With those words, I turned to leave resolutely, tossing out one last cold remark:
“The divorce papers are on the dining table. If you don’t sign them, please show up at the courthouse in three days.” Pushing through the flashing cameras of the gossip reporters, I walked out of the lake house where I had lived for three
years.
Since that place couldn’t be cleansed, it had to be cleared out entirely.
Ethan had bought the lake house for me four years ago with his first paycheck, gifting it to me outright.
I listed it for sale on a platform and bought a new studio apartment.
In fact, Ethan had been wrong from the very beginning. Having grown up alone, I’d always been afraid of living in an empty house.
The day I moved into the studio apartment, I went to a pet store and bought a golden tabby cat, naming it Muffin. Ethan somehow got wind of this and showed up at my door with a large bag of cat food.
“Sammy, I know this whole thing is my fault.
“I messed up my relationship with Chloe James, and I betrayed you.
“I know nothing I say now matters, but I still want to beg you, please don’t divorce me, okay? “Sammy, I can’t live without you…”
