The other end of the line was silent.
Devlin’s voice grew increasingly humble and cautious.
“I know I was wrong. I shouldn’t have deceived you. I have nothing to do with Roy anymore, and her child is gone too.”
“Honey, I’m begging you to forgive me this once. I really can’t live without you. I’ll pay any price as long as you’re willing to come back.”
Still, there was no response.
“Honey, please don’t…”
Devlin’s voice trembled.
But before he could finish speaking, the call was hung up.
Panic–stricken, he redialed, only to find himself blocked.
An overwhelming despair engulfed him, making it hard for him to breathe.
At that moment, his mother’s call came through.
“Mom, can you… help me find her? I really… miss her so much, but she won’t take anymore.”
Devlin’s mother felt a lump in her throat.
Her son, always so proud, would never beg her unless he had no other options.

“Maybe… maybe it’s better to let it go, okay? Mom is begging you. Stop looking for her. Come back and live a good life, and let the past go.”
“But I can’t. I really can’t.”
There was a long silence on the line.
Hearing Devlin’s muffled sobs, his mother’s eyes filled with tears,
If only she hadn’t meddled back then, how much better things would be now.
Devlin and Jennifer could have been the happiest couple, and her grandson would be four
years old.

“I’ll help you keep looking for her.”
But finding someone in a vast world was no easy task, especially when Jennifer clearly didn’t want to be found.

Another month passed.
Devlin kept missing her, his condition deteriorating until he ended up in the hospital.
Meanwhile, Jennifer had set her phone to filter out any news about Devlin, so she hadn’t seen anything about him.
She was fully immersed in her travels, having visited two more countries with Byron.
One evening, as she packed her luggage to head to her next destination, there was a knock at
the door.
To her surprise, it was Devlin’s mother, looking haggard and worn.
Jennifer’s smile faded.
“Devlin is in the hospital. I didn’t dare tell him you’re here, or he’d stop at nothing to find you,” Devlin’s mother said with a bitter smile.
“Can I talk to you for a moment? You don’t want him chasing you around the world like this, do you?”
Moved by the last sentence, Jennifer let her in.
“Just five minutes. I’m on a tight schedule.”
“Jennifer, I divorced Devlin’s father. He found himself a young girl who looks a lot like me when I was younger.”
“Devlin knew about it but hid it from me. Only now do I understand how you must have felt back then. Jennifer, I owe you an apology–for the child, for Roy, for everything.”
Devlin’s mother bowed deeply.
But Jennifer felt nothing. Late apologies like this, she had seen plenty, and they only made her feel disgusted.
Devlin’s public apologies and relentless pursuit had long since worn her patience thin.
It was a full two minutes before Devlin’s mother straightened up.
“I know this is my punishment, and I can only blame myself. But I promise you, I will never interfere in your and Devlin’s relationship again
“Jennifer, I’m begging you to give Devlin another chance. Please?”
Jennifer pressed her lips together.
Devlin’s mother, with her half–gray hair and humble demeanor, looked pitiful.
She handed over her phone, showing a video of Devlin.
In the video, he was half–sitting on a hospital bed, hooked up to an IV. His hospital gown hung

loosely on his gaunt frame, and he looked utterly emaciated.
“He truly knows he was wrong.”

Jennifer stared at the video, stunned. In less than half a year, Devlin had reduced himself to
this state.
Suddenly, Devlin called, and his mother put the phone on speaker.
“Mom, did you see Jennifer? Is she willing to give me another chance?“.
Devlin’s mother looked at Jennifer with pleading eyes, waiting for her answer.
After a moment of silence, Jennifer finally spoke
“Devlin…”
