Chapter 6
“It’s fine, guys. Don’t worry about me. I’ve always been a crybaby since I was little, so just get used to it,” Erika said, forcing a smile.
“I’ve never had a birthday. At home, my foster mother always made sure Rockie got the best food first. Only after Rockie finished eating would
I get what was left. Rockie is our dog, and my foster mother spoiled it like it was her own child.”
Upon hearing this, the others looked at her sympathetically, and they immediately began offering comforting words. Collin, with a pained expression, quickly stepped forward and hugged Erika tightly.
He lowered his head, whispering softly into her ear, before suddenly turning to glare at me, his eyes filled with fury. “Jessica! Are you doing this on purpose? Don’t be so heartless. Erika didn’t even complain about you being here, and yet you’re making trouble? How could I never have seen how selfish you are? You only ordered one cake, and it has your name on it?!”
Hearing this exchange and remembering Erika’s earlier words, the relatives began to assume that the truth had been revealed–Erika was the real daughter of the Wales family, and I was just the swapped child. They started to turn on me, their harsh words flooding in.
“What’s going on with Jessica?”
“She’s been living off others for so many years, and now the real heir is back. Why doesn’t she just step aside?”
“She won’t give up so easily. The Wales family is one of the wealthiest families around.”
“She’ll hang on for whatever scraps she can get, even if she can’t have the whole feast.”
2:15 PM
“Jessica’s so short–sighted. It’s just one cake! If she’d ordered one more and made Erika happy, maybe she wouldn’t be kicked out.”
As the insults continued, my father’s face darkened, and he slammed his hand on the table, his voice low but commanding.
“The test results haven’t come in yet. Jessie is still my daughter! If anyone else speaks out of turn, I won’t hesitate to have security escort them out. Now, let’s finish the birthday celebration.”
His authoritative tone made everyone fall silent, and they lowered their heads to quietly eat.
There was just an hour left until the test results would be ready. William had just landed and rushed straight to the hospital.
Upon arriving, he didn’t waste time on anything else. He headed straight for our parents and anxiously asked, “Mom, Dad, you were vague on
the phone. What’s going on?”
Erika looked up at William, her eyes red, and with a sob, she barely managed to say, “William, I’m your sister.”
William’s brow furrowed. “I only have one sister, and that’s Jessie. Who are you?”
His cold tone sent Erika into a breakdown. Her fragile emotions completely gave way, and she started crying uncontrollably. “You don’t want to accept me, huh? I’m your real family, but you’re all defending that imposter! If that’s how it is, I won’t stay here any longer. I’m leaving!”
