Chapter 230
In order to stop the topic from going on, Evelyn quickly swallowed the pills in her hand, drank the water, and blurted out, “Since I didn’t cook, I’ll do the dishes. After we clean up, let’s head out and set off some fireworks.”
“No worries, I’ll take care of the dishes,” Aron offered, always the picture of a gentleman.
Zoey couldn’t help but notice the special vibe between Evelyn and Aron; to her, they seemed like a match made in heaven. Just today. Caleb had mentioned wanting a divorce from Evelyn at the hospital. If that were to happen, Aron would have a chance to be with Evelyn
“I won’t fight you for chores; I’ll leave you two some private space, Zoey said with a smirk, winking at Aron. She was clearly hinting at something as she continued, speaking slower and with significant meaning. “Ill tidy up the table. The washing up is all yours–take all the time you need, like, forever for all I care
Evelyn caught the double entendre in Zoey’s words. Without missing a beat and maintaining her cool, she responded with a steady smile, “Sure, from now on, we’ll handle the dishes, and you clean up the table every time we have dinner.
Evelyn went along with Zoey’s suggestion, but when she repeated the words, the meaning took a whole new turn. While Zoey was certainly rooting for Evelyn to pair up with Aron in the future, Evelyn’s twist on the words deftly changed the course of the conversation. With a clever play of words, it was no longer just about Aron and Evelyn. Instead, she made it about the three of them, asserting that whenever Evelyn and Aron were together, Zoey would be there too.
All three of them, sharp as tacks, got the message loud and clear–Evelyn was subtly making it known that her and Aron getting together was not on the cards.
Zoey remained cool as a cucumber, going with the flow as she said, “Sure, and when I really don’t feel like doing it, I’ll just put on the charm. I bet, Evelyn, you’re going to let me off the hook, and if you do, I know Aron will, too. After all, what’s there to fear when the three of us stick together?”
Hearing this. Evelyn felt a twinge of guilt for possibly spoiling Zoey’s well–intentioned plan, and responded with indulgence. “You don’t even have to turn on the charm–just say the word, and have I ever refused you anything?”
She had said that earlier with the aim of making Aron give up on any hope of romance. But then she pondered–what was so wrong with Zoey’s thought? Zoey merely wanted happiness for the two people she cared about. Previously, whenever a suitor Evelyn wasn’t into came along, she would reject them outright without leaving any room for hope.
But now, perhaps due to her illness, Evelyn felt her heart had softened. They were sensible and acted as if nothing had happened. Evelyn was washing the dishes that had been washed by Aron. After tidying up the table, Zoey went to the door to prepare fireworks.
“Wait a minute. Put this on.”
After Evelyn and Aron had finished tidying up, Evelyn was about to step out when she was stopped by a voice as melodious. as a well–tuned guitar.
Turning around, she saw Aron holding a lightweight throw blanket that he seemed to have prepared out of thin air. Gently. he draped it over Evelyn’s delicate shoulders
