Lovestory6–chapter 1
My boyfriend’s parents came to stay at my place. They looked down on my monthly salary of 3,200 dollars, but they had their eyes on my 2–million–dollar jade bracelet.
When we were talking about getting married, his mom said, “This bracelet would make a perfect family heirloom. When you marry Drew, I’ll pass it to you in front of all our relatives and friends. It would be nice, don’t you think?”
I almost burst into laughter, thinking, “They wanna use my bracelet as their family heirloom? Nice
Try!”
I’d been with Drew Larson for half a year when I stumbled upon a group chat named “Happy
Family” on his phone.
His dad, Kolby Larson, asked in the group chat: “Drew, you’ve been dating that Penelope for over half a year now, right? How much does she make a month?”
Drew honestly replied: “3,800.”
Kolby: “Still 3,800? She’s a college grad. How come she only makes 3,800?”
Kolby: “I make 5,300 at the construction site in a month. What were you thinking? With your status, you could find a better girl. Why settle for someone who makes 3,800 dollars? She can hardly support herself; how’s she going to help you buy a house or a car?”
Drew: “It’s okay, Dad. Although she doesn’t earn much, her company has great benefits. What we eat and use now is all given by her company. It saves us quite a bit.”
‘Drew’s mom, Scarlet Barnett, chimed in: “What about rent? You bear it alone and let her live for
free? Just break up with her and find another one. I’m sure many girls would fall for you.”
Drew fell silent; so did his parents.
He didn’t speak up for me again. And I knew exactly what that meant.
It was from this moment that I was planning to break up with him.
A’few days later, Drew suddenly told me that his parents wanted to come and stay for a few days, hoping I would agree.
My house bought this house for me. But to make Drew feel better, I told him it was rented by my company as part of the company benefits.
But Drew told his parents that he rented it himself for 2,500 per month.
All this was because of his pride; Drew told me that in front of outsiders and elders, I must make him look nice.

So I didn’t tell him that I run my own company or that my mom was a local tycoon.
For his pride, I told him my monthly salary was only 3800 at most with good company benefits. And all our food and supplies were provided by my company.
Drew believed it and moved into my guest room.
I didn’t think it was a good idea for Drew’s parents to stay at our home, especially after seeing their comments in the group chat; I didn’t know how to face them.
Drew pleaded with me for a long time, saying, “They’re my parents, Penelope! They just want to yisit us; can’t you just let them come? It’s not bad for you guys to meet and get to know each other better.”
I sneered inwardly, “Getting to know each other better? I think they’re up to no good!”
Still, I agreed.
I wanted to see how they would treat me–their future daughter–in–law with a monthly salary of 3,800–after they arrived.
Unexpectedly, the next afternoon, Drew told me his parents had already come!
Enraged, I snapped, “You should’ve told me in advance so I could be mentally prepared! How can you tell me about it only after they are already home?”
Drew dismissed it. “Hey! What’s the big deal? I didn’t want to disturb you since you’re busy. You’re pretty. I’m sure they will like you. There’s nothing to prepare for. Just go home confidently; I’ll pick you up in a minute!”
Drew had mentioned before that his parents were rather reserved. So I applied light makeup in the office to ensure I looked decent.
On the way home, Drew reminded me more than once to be polite and respectful in front of his parents when we arrived home. And most importantly, he needed to look good.
He told me not to mention that the house was rented by my company. And if his parents knew he lived in my house, they would be pissed.
I didn’t quite understand but chose to do a
