Chapter 9
1/3
Dominick couldn’t hear a word the police were saying. His eyelids twitched violently, and suddenly, he sprang to his feet. “I need to see Peyton! I don’t believe she’s really dead. A miscarriage? How could she lose the baby? We’ve been trying for five years and never had one–she has to be lying… She must be putting on a show!”
As Dominick spoke, he suddenly tried to bolt out of the room. The officers, realizing he was completely unhinged, acted quickly. They pinned him down and handcuffed him on the spot.
Even as he lay face down, he thrashed and struggled, roaring like a man possessed, “Let me see Peyton! I don’t believe she’s dead! She can’t be!”
As I watched Dominick’s reddened eyes and distorted
expression, I shook my head with quiet sorrow. With me gone, he would have been free–free to finally be with Madison, just as he had probably dreamed. Shouldn’t that have made him happy? Why had he looked so miserable, so lost?
The officers held Dominick down, his anguished screams echoing through the entire police station. Then, all of a sudden, the shouting stopped.
It was like the fight had drained out of him in an instant. His body slumped against the floor, forehead thudding against the tiles–over and over, slowly, mechanically.
Chapter 9
“Let me see Peyton… Please let me see her. I don’t believe she’s gone. Peyton, stop messing with me. I’m sorry, okay? I’m sorry…” His voice cracked, broken up by muffled sobs,
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I crouched down, leaned closer, and there it was–Dominick’s face, covered in tears, his expression broken and drenched in sorrow.
Dominick choked on his sobs, his voice trembling as he turned to look at the officers. “Please… let me see her. I’m begging you. I just want to see her one last time… She can’t be dead. She loved me so much; there’s no way she’s gone…”
The officers, naturally, wouldn’t agree to his request so easily. To be thorough, they contacted my mother, confirming many details. They also checked surveillance footage from various locations, meticulously cross–referencing everything.
After their careful work, the police concluded that I’d gotten into the accident after Dominick stormed out of the house. He was, of course, taken into custody.
Yet when the police interrogated him, Dominick seemed to have lost his mind completely. Over and over, he just repeated the same words. “Please… let me see Peyton. Just one look… that’s all I’m asking…” As he begged, his eyes turned red again, fresh tears streaming down his face.
The police didn’t give in to Dominick’s unreasonable request. Instead, they acted responsibly and brought Madison to the station as well.

When I heard Madison was under investigation, too, I thought Dominick would lose it again, screaming for the police to leave her alone. But he didn’t react at all. It was as if his mind had shut down, looping on a single thought. “Let me see Peyton… just one look. Please…”
