Chapter 57

Mr. Thomas, the Mercer family is gonna be here any minute. The lookout burst into the cavern, his face tense with urgency. Aron and David exchanged glances and quickly closed the chest

In no time, Aron and David emerged from the cave, their vehicle peeling off. It wasn’t long before they narrowly missed a convoy of black SUVs. Someone in one of the SUVs scowled, floored the accelerator toward the desolate hill, and quickly tapped out a text on their phone

Right then, the sharp ding of an incoming text cut through the quiet of the room

Caleb strode forward, grasp firm, and pulled Evelyn off her feet, but she fought against his hold with vigor. Despite her efforts, his grip didn’t give. As Evelyn writhed, she stumbled and tumbled backward onto the bed, sending a pile of neatly folded laundry tumbling to the floor

Caleb! Are you crazy?Evelyn raised her head and glared at him resentfully

Caleb’s eyes were filled with rage. Evelyn, you mean I am crazy? What are you trying to

o do now?

Tell me

Looks like I’m packing up! Didn’t you accuse me of crashing at your place without permission? I guess I ought to clear out my stuff ASAP to free up space for you and Ava, right? Evelyn quipped, a sarcastic tilt to her brows as she locked eyes with a visibly seething Caleb

Why’s he so mad? Evelyn mused silently, her inner voice dripping with irony as she began to pack. He detested the idea of her living here, yet here she was, clearing out just for him. As she folded her clothing with exaggerated precision, a touch of bitterness crept into her thoughts. The houseCaleb had said it himselfwas meant for the woman he cherished. Ava was the intended, no surprises there. The irony wasn’t lost on her: Caleb most likely never dreamed it would be Evelyn who ended up here. And now, with hardly any time spent under this roof, she was being ousted, just like he wanted. Evelyn was lost in thought when suddenly Caleb pushed her down onto the bed with great force

Evelyn frowned tightly, crying out in pain, Caleb! What else do you want from me?!”

Caleb’s grip on Evelyn’s shoulders tightened as his rage grew. He squeezed as if he wanted to grind her into dust. Evelyn, moving out? Where to, huh? Aron’s place?”

Evelyn’s shoulders hurt so much that she couldn’t speak

Not getting a response from Evelyn, Caleb mistook her silence for agreement and, unaware, doubled the pressure on her shoulders. Talk to me! Why are you silent? Got yourself a new man and now you’re rushing to dump your ex, is that it? Answer me! Weren’t you the one who said you were so in love with me that you couldn’t stand to live without me?Bloodshot eyes, shaky voiceCaleb’s hands were tense with fury, and he looked like he wanted nothing more than to tear her apart

Ithurts! Caleb, you’re hurting me!Evelyn managed to gasp out

Hearing those faint cries of pain seemed to snap Caleb back to reality, and he released her with an almost scared jolt. Evelyn rapidly scooted back, bringing her knees up and pushing away with her feet in a clumsy scramble. She rubbed her throbbing shoulders, fear etched on her face as she stared at the man before her. A sinking feeling told her that if Caleb hadn’t snapped out of it, she might very well have ended up with broken bones or worse

Caleb watched as Evelyn cowered at the head of the bed, a look of pure terror in her eyes directed at him. A wave of dread washed over hin, and he lifted his hands, staring at the angry red marks engraved in his skinthe evidence of his rage. His stomach twisted at the thought if he hadn’t come to his senses, could he have actually strangled Evelyn right then and

there
